Overpriced and bad policy about cancellation

By Dario C., Switzerland, Verified Reviewer

I tried HalloFresh and was called to see if I wanted to give it another go when receiving a discount of $20 on the next 2 boxes. I told them that I don't need it but thought okay, give it another try, then 3 - 4 days before the delivery, I changed my mind and wanted to cancel. But was told that I am forced to still get the box that is on the order because I didn't cancel 1 week prior on Wednesday night.

I am angry that I now need to accept the order and pay for it, when I have no interest in having it, simply because their policy forces me to do so and their customer service refused to cancel it for the upcoming delivery.

Won't be ordering from them again, that's for sure.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

DO NOT ORDER

By Sally M., Maine, Verified Reviewer

Do not order from this company. I wanted a vegetarian menu. The directions wanted my credit card information FIRST then I could select my meal plan. After my submission of payment there was no option and now (10 minutes after my order) they will neither refund my money nor cancel the delivery of food I do not want.

This company is a rip off, do not do it!

By Kristen F., Texas, Verified Reviewer

A friend of mine recommended a company called HelloFresh. So I went on their site to see what it was all about. The first thing they ask you to do is to put in your information and choose a method of payment. I should have stopped right there as that was a huge red flag, but since she had worked with this company, I thought I would check it out. Well, they charged me $69.88 when I never selected any food or completed an order. So I called the company today and they said I did complete the order and the food is already on the way. Darn scam! They would give me back $49.95 but no more since I had the coupon. That is crazy!

Best home delivery food service

By Rick M., Arizona, Verified Reviewer

We have been using HelloFresh for approximately six months with great results. The food has always been fresh, delivered when they said it would be and the recipes are easy to follow. We have recommended HelloFresh to many family and friends. Most have schedules that don't work for this type of service, but for us, it is great. We highly recommend it and do so to as many people as we can.

CROOKS

By Danielle F., Georgia, Verified Reviewer

I signed up for HelloFresh wanting to give it a try. After spending wasted time figuring out what the heck is going on on the website, I decided to cancel. Exactly 23 minutes after signing up.

Apparently clicking a picture authorizes HelloFresh to charge your credit card and still send an unwanted delivery after a canceled subscription. A $33.94 + $11.97 gourmet upcharge on my credit card?! A 23-minute subscription!? OUTRAGEOUS. Needless to say I went to the web chat followed by a live phone call to resolve (or attempt to) the charges. Terrible customer service, it is absurd how they treat their customers and won't even at least TRY to make things right.

Well, I got the delivery I didn't want so I figured I might as well whip up the Salsa Verde meal I unwillingly paid for. The result - mediocre-unsavory meal, food poisoning, 18 hours of torture, and a trip to the hospital to get IV hydrated. Today - recall on HelloFresh red chili peppers for salmonella. HelloFresh, you are a bunch of CROOKS!

Items missing and unacceptable resolution

By Laura S., Washington DC, Verified Reviewer

I received a gift card for Christmas and was excited to try HelloFresh as I had heard good things. The first negative for me was that you can’t redeem a gift card without giving payment information. Red flag! You got your money, why do you need additional payment information? I reluctantly provided my information deciding I could just cancel per their policy. Well, I received my meals today, one of which was honey glazed pork tenderloin. The tenderloin was missing! The main ingredient was missing!

I contacted customer service via chat, and the agent apologized and offered to credit the account for approximately $36 (the cost of the tenderloin). Well, my account had already been deactivated because I wasn’t sure if I would use it again. So the credit wouldn’t really help me. I just wanted what was paid for, however, the agent said they don’t ship specific ingredients. I explained again that the credit wasn’t useful because I wasn’t planning to order anything else. I asked if there was any other resolution they could offer. Again I was told that was all they could do.

If I was on the fence about continuing with the service, there is no doubt now. I will not use them again and will never recommend them to anyone. And based on other reviews, I am now concerned that they have my credit card information.

Beware

By Jill L., Ohio, Verified Reviewer

I was notified of a shipment today from HelloFresh and just spent 45 minutes on their chat and talking to a live person only to be told they WOULD NOT ISSUE A CREDIT because I had missed their deadline. Yes, I missed it but only by 24 hours. I have many things to do which does not include checking the fine print to see if I've obeyed their rules. I have never heard of such hardnosed customer service policies.

If you are considering using HelloFresh, DON'T. No matter how good their food may be, their customer service policies are lousy.

Bait and switch

By Kendall L., Boulder, CO, Verified Reviewer

I signed on for a $59/week plan and was happy at first with the recipes. They were tasty and the instructions were easy for my 11-year-old to follow (although they take way longer to prep than they claim). We did notice that the veggies were often not fresh and we once received shrimp that was inedible. I highly recommend that you avoid ordering seafood from them. It's just not fresh.

Then they started to introduce "premium" meals, which cost quite a bit extra. I ordered one without realizing it and vowed to pay closer attention in the future. Soon after that, there was a week which I carefully skipped since we had out-of-town guests. But I received an email letting me know my credit card had been charged. I called immediately to tell them not to ship it and they said I had ordered it and they couldn't cancel shipment even though it was several days ahead. Coincidentally they were shipping me two premium meals which added $28 to my weekly bill. I don't even eat steak and had indicated that in my preferences, but they were shipping me steak and lobster which I had not ordered.

Customer service was completely unapologetic, so I canceled my subscription. This was not the first time I had received the wrong meals and I was no longer comfortable giving them free reign on my credit card. Luckily I was able to dispute the charge with my credit card company.

HelloFresh won't last long with customer service like this. At best they are ignorant, and at worst they are baiting and switching intentionally.

Beware!

By Terri J., Oakland, CA, Verified Reviewer

I received a coupon and was going to give HelloFresh a try. Once they had my credit card number, it was all over. Screens started flashing before my eyes, racking up charge after charge after charge. Before I could pick up the phone to tell my credit card company that fraud was occurring, the siphoning of funds had already begun. Needless to say, since I wasn't even afforded a chance to pick any food, they were stealing my money.

This is A SCAM!

By Yasmin E., Germany, Verified Reviewer

I've registered and ordered my first meal with the app in Germany, but it didn't mention anything about weekly delivery!

Now I'm getting a 43 EUR box which is actually worth 20 EUR and I don't need and won't use!

How is this worth the price?

By Margaret B., Chicago, IL, Verified Reviewer

My mom decided to try HelloFresh a while ago. She liked it, but I wasn't impressed; I thought the recipes too simple, the portions too small, and the price too high. Mom likes to look for recipes online, so the planning angle wasn't worth it. The price seemed awfully high, so the value angle didn't work. And then it's not easy, because we still had to cook.

Okay, so now we're coming up to Thanksgiving. Mom suggested we try the HelloFresh box, so I said I'd look into it. They say it serves 8-10; given their idea of decent portion sizes, I'd say it might stretch to 8, but not to 10. You don't get much for the $160 or so (including shipping). You get a respectable-sized turkey, but when you figure out you're paying about $60 for a turkey you could get up the street at Aldi for under $15, you start to wonder what you're paying for. The sides and dessert are probably pretty good, but for that much money, I expect something more than bread stuffing, green beans, mashed potatoes, canned cranberry sauce, and an apple crisp. None of this stuff is prepared; they say the whole thing can be done in 4 hours, but it looks like a tough 4 hours to me. None of us wants to spend the day in the kitchen, and we REALLY don't want to spend another day cleaning up after - at those prices, couldn't they include foil pans? Couldn't they throw in some dinner rolls?

We're going to stick with having it catered. The price is a tad lower, and we get what we want and as much of it as we want.
