BetterHelp has helped me out so much

By Trina M., Covington, VA, Verified Reviewer

I love the platform, the simplicity of use, and especially my counselor. I changed counselors after my first session...which was an awesome option and now I feel perfectly matched. She gives me so much time and input. She allows me to vent and still circles my thinking back to see my situation in a new way. I love it. I have needed this for a while and sometimes it just helps to have someone outside of your circumstance to ask you questions that allow you to see things more clearly and make the changes you need to make.

Worst therapist

By Sierra S., Chicago, IL, Verified Reviewer

Lovea is not a good therapist, she personalizes everything then claims her client is a trigger. This was by far my worst experience ever.

BetterHelp is very helpful

By Grandy L., Chiba, Japan, Verified Reviewer

I am happy, and I really do mean happy, about my experience with BetterHelp. The service I was provided helped me in a time where I felt lost and felt the best solution was to seek professional assistance in a problem-solution scenario. This has taught me to be a better person and more stable so that I can focus on what I want to focus on throughout the day and better my relationship with others around me.

Pros and Cons

The quality of the person I was partnered with

The accessibility to talk to my counselor even though I live across the world

The availability of the counselor

The cost, but I understand that it's the quality I am paying for, therefore I overlook it

Finally, I feel heard

By Lisa L., Los Angeles, CA, Verified Reviewer

I started using BetterHelp a couple of months after a not so great experience with another online therapy provider. I was nervous to start again because with my last therapist I felt like we mulled over the same issue without getting anywhere. The first therapist I was matched with on BetterHelp immediately made me feel heard. It was the most satisfying feeling to have someone take the smallest bit of time to ask deeper questions, to better understand my process of thinking, and to provide appropriate suggestions, insights, and advice to help with my concerns and issues. I have only used BetterHelp for a month and I already feel motivated to continue working with my therapist towards a better me.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

A great and much needed service

By Ahmar H., Mae Sot, Thailand, Verified Reviewer

I live abroad. My income is limited. And I needed help in a place where mental health counseling options were limited. Not only as a client, but also as a physician and health researcher, I HIGHLY recommend this service. It is especially helpful for people who need it, but also for those just looking for practical ways to improve their mental well being. They have brought together many well-known, proven methods for improving one's mental well-being in an easily accessible, low-cost platform. Even being abroad, I found a US-based counselor soon after signing up, and we have been able to be flexible given the time differences, and able to stay connected outside of our scheduled sessions via the Betterhelp messaging interface. You may lose out on face-to-face sessions, but for people in need - such as myself - there are always obstacles to overcome on the path to being a better you.

Length of Use: 3–6 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

My counselor

Variety of session format options (video, live text, voice)

The messaging interface

Cost

BetterHelp "worksheets"

"Extra" sessions or limited number of sessions and a clear explanation to clients

Tech issues on some of the counseling session formats (but this may be local internet issues)

Don’t know what I’d do without it

BetterHelp provides a modern way for me to have access to the therapy I need. I personally prefer to not go to in-person appointments. I love that everything is either a video chat, a phone call, or a message. I love all the features provided by the app like sharing worksheets with my counselor or setting up a goal plan.

Easy to get started!

By Kelsey C., Louisiana, Verified Reviewer

In the past, the biggest hurdle was actually that I was procrastinating going to a therapist because I didn't want to have to go into an office and commit, but this made it so easy for me to get started. If you're on the fence, just give it a try. It's worth it.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

BetterHelp is a great resource!

By Kristine L., St. Paul, MN, Verified Reviewer

I strongly recommend BetterHelp as an effective online counseling service. Before the COVID-19 crisis, I probably wouldn’t have considered online therapy, but as it turns out I like it quite a lot. My therapist only uses written messaging for communication and it works well for me since it gives me a chance to think about what I want to say, and then I can take my time reading his responses and reviewing them as many times as I need to. It helps me to remember the advice better than if it was just spoken.

My therapist has many years of experience and is very wise, and he also sends me a lot of excerpts from articles that pertain to my situation, but he uses humor and plain language as well. He is very supportive and makes me feel good about myself, while offering constructive suggestions for ways that I could better handle various situations that would be healthier for me. He also doesn’t judge me.

I have found it extremely helpful in navigating through some confusing and destructive relationship issues in my life, so I would recommend BetterHelp to anyone looking for online counseling, and I actually have recommended it to my friends!

Length of Use: 3–6 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

I have an awesome therapist!

I can write to my therapist whenever I have something on my mind.

I can reread my therapist’s advice as often as I need to.

Sometimes it would be nice to meet with a therapist face to face.

I don’t always hear back as soon as I would like.

They really do care

By Hannah C., Hickory, NC, Verified Reviewer

I have been doing therapy with BetterHelp for three months and I am very happy with my experience. I was given a free week to try it out. When I wasn’t able to schedule a live session with my counselor within that first week, they extended my free trial until after my first session just to make sure I could get what I needed.

They also have financial aid, which is the only way I could afford therapy due to being out of work because of COVID.

I was with my first counselor for the first two months. While she was helpful, I was still not feeling like I was benefiting from our sessions. I switched counselors and I am very happy with my new counselor. We have already made a lot of progress in a short amount of time and we click better. She is available for messaging in between sessions and always responds in a timely manner. BetterHelp makes it very easy to switch counselors and has an in-depth screening to find the best match for you and what you need.

They also have groupinars for many different subjects ranging from depression/communication/self-esteem, etc. that have been helpful for me as well. It’s like group therapy and you get to experience different counselors with them as well.

I highly recommend BetterHelp for anybody that is new to therapy and/or especially if you can’t get to an in-person therapist or has issues with the cost. BetterHelp makes it pretty impossible to have no excuse to not get the help you need.

Length of Use: 3–6 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Access to my counselor in between sessions

Groupinars

Financial aid

Ease of transition to a new counselor

I wanna take my counselor with me when I move out of state!

A fantastic platform

By Jenny C., St. Louis, MO, Verified Reviewer

I cannot say enough good things about BetterHelp. I love the fact that for the price I would be spending with a counselor face-to-face once a week, I get my counselor as much as I need to (which is unheard of in the counseling community).

Had I been seeing a counselor at an office near my home/work, if I needed to speak with her during the day (not on my scheduled day to visit) I would need to call the office and wait for her to respond. Sometimes that response would be something like, "You will need to schedule a visit..." or a phone call would be short and sweet. She's not getting paid extra to have more conversations with me other than our weekly one-on-one.

In addition, if my counselor asked me to journal, she would need to read it after my visit and comment on things on my next visit. That would always put us a week behind.

With BetterHelp, I can send messages to my counselor at any time and I know when she'll read/respond to it (she told me when she looks at her inbox). I can send pictures if needed, send a voice message if I don't have time to type. I can also talk to her on the phone (but I prefer video, so that's what I do). Not to mention, if I need an extra video/phone session with her, I can just go to her calendar, see the day/times she's available and book it (so two video sessions in one week for the price of one face-to-face session with a counselor near me).

If I share a journal entry, she reads it within 24 hours and always shares a comment.

Our weekly visits are always an extension of the constant communication we're doing throughout the week and we're not wasting time playing catch up.

If you don't feel like you're connecting very well with your counselor, you can change counselors at any time.

This truly has been such a lovely way to "see" a counselor. In striving to move forward with my grief and anxiety, I feel like BetterHelp is allowing it to be a constant current of healing. Not something I am only truly dealing with once a week in front of a counselor (and then I'm on my own for the rest of the week). To me, that type of help is more stop and go. That doesn't suit me and I believe that's why I've always struggled (and failed) seeing a counselor.

With BetterHelp, my counseling is active every day. We're communicating every day and that gives me the momentum to keep moving forward into better health.

Better Help is literally giving me better health every day.

Length of Use: 3–6 months

Amazing place to find a counselor

By Kali D., Maryland, Verified Reviewer

I've never met or talked with a counselor for my personal needs or whatever in the past until now. To my surprise, BetterHelp gave me a great counselor after taking a short quiz about myself. The counselor I got was amazing and helpful during the whole two months I subscribed for. BetterHelp offers features that I appreciate the most: unlimited text chats and easy to schedule a session with my counselor. If I ever found myself in need of online counseling again in the future, I definitely would use their service again.

Great app/website, and good advice so far

By Steve P., England, Verified Reviewer

I've had two live chat conversations, and a couple of chat threads. It's good to discuss my challenges with an expert, and we seem to be making progress in that area with some practical advice. The weekly chats are only 30 minutes though, so it's difficult to get too far into anything, which is a shame, as I think my counselor is good.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

The app is very easy to use

My counselor is great so far

The journal function is really nice

30 mins sessions not great value for money

Tough to get into decent conversations

Not much happening on the daily chat, I don't feel like my counselor is there outside the weekly chat

Caters to your comfort level

By Victoria S., Cuyahoga Falls, OH, Verified Reviewer

Before BetterHelp, I never felt like I could be totally open about my feelings with a therapist. I have a hard time talking aloud about my thoughts, but put me behind a keyboard and I will open right up. It has me working honestly with myself through a platform that works for me. BetterHelp is extremely beneficial!

By Teresa W., Pittsburgh, PA, Verified Reviewer

My daughter needed a therapist ASAP, but with her work schedule, it could take weeks before she got the help she so desperately needed. I researched online therapy and decided to suggest she give BetterHelp a try. Within hours of my daughter showing up in great emotional distress, she was texting with a licensed therapist...

Everyone should do it

By Franchesca D., New York, Verified Reviewer

This is such a great platform. I find it very convenient to schedule quiet time in the comfort of my home rather than have to commute to get to an appointment. It feels more private meeting this way as well. The questionnaire I filled out really did nail it on the head when matching me up with a counselor. I love my counselor and I'm so grateful to have this service. It is so easy to send messages whenever you want, to journal online and share, the video/sound quality is very good, and I like that I get reminders before my session to get ready. We all could use a little help every now and then to see things from a different perspective and to help us grow on our journey. I highly recommend BetterHelp.

BetterHelp really helps

By Kalob T., Edmonton, Canada, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp has been the best thing to happen to me. I wasn't able to open up to a counselor in person, but the online dynamic made it easier.

I thought there would be less accountability with my counselor since it's online, but the accountability is still there!

The counselor they matched me with is perfect. I could not ask for a better, more helpful, more supportive person. Honestly, my counselor is the person that helps me through this wacky world we live in and helps me make sense of all the crazy things going on in the world and in my life.
