Always there to help

By Jade L., Québec, Canada, Verified Reviewer

This company seems to always be trying to better themselves. I've had some minor issues, but whenever I contact them about it, they reply and they are always helpful. I've even made recommendations to them and they always take them into account. I've been using this service for almost 2 years and I've not been let down by them. My counselor is absolutely amazing, too! So available...I think you have to find the one that suits you. I tried one before, a very kind person but we didn't really click.

This time it was much better! Just like in face to face you have to "shop" your therapist, same deal...

They also offer financial aid, and I think that's amazing.

Overall, a good company that listens to their customers and hires great counselors.

Wouldn't have gotten therapy otherwise

By Jim K., Illinois, Verified Reviewer

If I hadn't heard about online counseling and therapy services that offer a texting/instant messaging option, I would probably never have gotten professional help. My anxiety has always been set off by telephone calls, going to places I've never been before, and meeting new people - so just the thought of making an appointment at a clinic and beginning the therapy process with a stranger face-to-face was so daunting and nauseating that I spent 7 years never overcoming it. Thanks to BetterHelp, I can talk to a licensed professional to get the help I've needed for so long but have never been able to get until now (and the price is affordable, especially with the financial assistance if you qualify). I'm so relieved and grateful for this service!

Excellent service

By Jennifer M., Dublin, Ireland, Verified Reviewer

I find this service really helpful, to be honest. I have tried face-to-face counseling before but never found the right counselor for me. I was lucky enough to find the perfect counselor for me the first time around, but it’s great to have the option to switch if needs be.

The service is fairly priced, and it’s great to have a messaging service, phone calls, video chats and seminars at my fingertips.

The only issue I had to start with was that it’s all based in the US and I was matched with a counselor 8 hours behind, but she’s incredibly accommodating, so it all worked out in the end.

I have recommended this service and will again for sure!

Amazing counseling option

By Jordan M., Utah, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp has provided me with some of the greatest counseling services and progress that I have seen as I have gone to several counselors. The largest pro is that a counselor is available at all times, especially at night or other times when you are actually in the depths of your pain and problems; you can actually tell them how you feel. Going to other counselors, which I used to meet with weekly or bi-weekly, I felt I couldn't explain exactly how I felt and we made much slower, if any, progress on my problems.

If you have really serious problems where big life interventions may be necessary, it may be good to see someone locally. But for 95% of us where we struggle with depression and anxiety but are still at least going through the motions of life, BetterHelp is amazing.

I was stuck and alone, and I needed a solution

By Angie C., Barcelona, Spain, Verified Reviewer

I started using BetterHelp after I started medical school. I have been feeling hopeless for a very long time, and I couldn't seem to understand myself. I was desperate for friendships and relationships, but I kept isolating myself, being passive and cold to the people that wanted the same thing. It was getting harder to concentrate and study and work at the pace I was used to doing it, but the number of obligations and the volume of work and responsibilities was getting bigger. It was hard to keep caring about everything, and my family wasn't understanding of what I was going through, so those relationships suffered as well.

My counselor is a very good listener and super empathetic. It was easy to find something I could work on to feel better, even though I went into therapy thinking I couldn't be helped because something was deeply wrong with me. She is very knowledgeable and works very well with me to understand the things that are important to me. I think that I was originally looking for a way to be more open to people so I wouldn't have to be lonely, but I have learned a lot more about myself thanks to my counselor's amazing expertise. I have learned how some things from my past were controlling me, and how sometimes being self-aware of what is controlling you can ease the power that it has over you. I am still working on it, but I am a much more confident person today, and I am finally letting myself care about other people as much as I wanted to.

BetterHelp has a few cool features that I've really benefited from. Talking to someone online was much easier than walking to a counselor's office in real-life and explaining them your problems. I was really ashamed of having these feelings, so I wouldn't even have been able to look this person in the eye. I think it really helped that I got to have a bit of anonymity before my first video session - I typed my thoughts and feelings into a message and got a reassuring timely reply that there was a possible explanation for what I was feeling, which really encouraged me to go on in this process and open up about my concerns. The video call quality can be a bit weird sometimes, but if that didn't work, we did a phone call. International phone calls are included in the cost of the service. The chat is comfortable, and you can access it from your phone with a pin code.

A great solution for me

By Sue M., Menifee, CA, Verified Reviewer

I started out looking for grief counseling after the death of my husband three years ago. I had gone to a facilitated grief group, and it started me on the road to recovery, but I needed more. I was looking for something more focused and intense and cost-effective. And I found BetterHelp.

Since then, the counseling has migrated to other issues in my life although the issue of ongoing grief is still there.

I have found BetterHelp.com to be a great solution for me. Instead of just a one-hour session a week, I have access to my counselor as often as I want to communicate with her.

I like being able to write out how I am feeling and what I am dealing with. It helps me to put it in perspective, and I feel like I can say more than I would in an in-person session.

My counselor has been extremely responsive, and I believe she understands my needs and situation completely. I like that when I haven't responded in a few days, she will follow-up to check on me and I get an email message letting me know she has sent me a message. That is something I truly appreciate.

The counselor also offers other methods of communication as well. The only one I have availed myself of is the button marked "Urgent" and she responded quickly.

I would recommend BetterHelp to someone who is looking for counseling.

BetterHelp matched me to the best therapist for me!

By Jordan H., New York, Verified Reviewer

I've been in therapy for five years. In the first four years, I really struggled with my progress and didn't really flow with my therapist. BetterHelp asked me questions about my concerns and preferences, and I got matched to the most supportive and productive therapist I've had. She shares articles, seminars, worksheets, and videos that pertain to me and my situation. They even have group webinars you can participate in for various issues and traumas.

I have been using BetterHelp for 10 months now and I feel like I'm making so much progress, it's nuts! It is convenient, engaging, and most importantly effective! When I started, I paid about $32 a week for a full week of messaging and video chat sessions vs. a $25 copay for an hour of face-to-face therapy. Eventually, I had been a subscriber so long that I was offered a plan for $20. Customer service is super nice, by the way.

Obviously, I love BetterHelp. I'm so thankful for them and my therapist. 10 out of 10 I would recommend!

I have a Fairy Godfather

By Josie D., Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, Verified Reviewer

I've had one session and I'm writing a review. It probably is safe to say that so far so good. You go through a series of questions about yourself before they can match you up with a therapist. If you want someone with the same orientation, beliefs, gender, whoever you're comfortable with, they have it. Although, I did my research before signing up, so I was fully prepared for their customer journey strategy, touch points when applying. The questions basically pop up automatically, and after going through the profile survey and pouring out your problems on an AI bot, you are then taken to close the deal seriously. Basically, payment up front for a full month or whatever how many sessions you choose. Although, I think it is cheaper than seeing a local therapist, petrol and apart from the time difference, it still efficient and open to different channels of communication, live chat, phone, video call. Mine made me laugh; I was shocked.

BetterHelp has changed my life in so many ways, I can’t even begin to describe. My therapist and I mesh so well, and she truly helps me in any way she can (Regina Spencer). I had something extremely urgent happen to me, and she was one of the next people I told after my parents. She truly cares and was ready to help immediately. I can’t thank these people enough for being the extra support I need in hard times. Thank you again.

Terrible experience

By Katelyn L., Texas, Verified Reviewer

I started BetterHelp. I was on it for 4 days before I decided to cancel. The reason for canceling was because my counselor wasn't counseling. She didn't offer to set up a time within the week to chat or even ask how I would prefer to chat. She said, "tell me whats' going on." I did. She said, "Thanks for sending, I will reply once I've processed the information." She then sent me a worksheet, which I did. She sent me a sheet to read. That was it. She never responded to my issues like she said she would.

So after 4 days I decided to quit. I received no counseling. I reached out to BetterHelp to cancel and pay for 4 days of "service," and they said they'd have to charge me for the week and I could use it for another 3 days. I explained I was not liking my counselor. Why would I want more worksheets from her? They never responded back, they ignored me. A waste of $65. I feel duped and cheated. Terrible service.

Would not recommend

By C G., San Francisco, CA, Verified Reviewer

I used BetterHelp for a few months. I felt my therapist was not professional and may not have even been qualified to be a counselor. The therapist talked about themselves quite a bit, accused me of lying to them very often, and was passive aggressive. They also diagnosed me with a disorder I definitely don't have. After I brought this to their attention, and asked them to work with me on my level, they basically said I was the one that was wrong. They again accused me of lying and being the thing that I am not. Then they contacted BetterHelp themselves and told them these things. BetterHelp then kicked me off the platform. I have had in-person therapy for years, and found it helpful. But, this was not even close to a professional therapy session. I would not recommend using this platform at all.

Highly recommend!

By Ami D., Massachusetts, Verified Reviewer

I have been to more than my share of counselors over the years and could never find one that "worked" for me. You get one hour a week, pay your co-pay and walk away still dazed and confused.

I was at a really low point and needed to try something different. I went online and decided to try BetterHelp. And it was one of the best decisions I could have made for myself. After a few simple questions, I was matched with a wonderful, caring counselor. I was offered video-chats in addition to the online interactions. But with my busy work schedule, and the way I process things, I have been more than satisfied with the online sessions. We "talk" 5 days a week! I can go on 2-3 times a day and get out whatever I need to.

I am prompted to think with gentle questions, thoughtful suggestions, and gentle encouragements. I cannot speak highly enough about my experience.

Appreciated and liked company and therapist

By Imuetinyanosa E., Verified Reviewer

I asked that I be matched up with a Christian counselor and thankfully she was given me to me. Though I was initially skeptical of paying BetterHelp after my 7-day trial, quitting counseling was not an option until I spoke with her again because our first online video session was interrupted by a glitch in the network but she had made a good first impression for me to come back a second time. Plus not only was I satisfied after I read Dr. Brewer’s info, but talking with her proved she was honest and I felt like I had found someone I could really talk to.

Dr. Brewer has been very observant, found out ways that work well to help me gain clarity. I am positive that she cares because she keeps the lines open for chitchats after our once a week one hour phone or video session(s). She has been a blessing and throughout our time together for about a month, it has become obvious that I have gained clarity and insight that I needed to move forward in my life.

Exactly what I needed

By Rebecca M., Rock Hill, SC, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp is exactly what I needed for my preference. I have anxiety and depression. So, going to someone in person made me feel anxious. So I found BetterHelp because of an ad. I was skeptical because it's an online thing, but I did my research and signed up. I found a therapist named Patricia and she's been incredibly helpful for my personal experiences. If you have anxiety about seeing someone in person, or you can't afford a counselor, they have the option to help financially, and then you can just text a counselor, or phone them. And when comfortable you can video chat, but you don't have to. I'm appreciative that I found the app, I really needed someone to talk me through questions I had about myself and others, and it's nice to know when I need it, I can just send a text real quick to a therapist.

Good therapy/bad business

By Susan P., Los Banos, CA, Verified Reviewer

I had a great therapist assigned to me. He was compassionate. Bright, caring, and helped a great deal. My problem was dealing with the BetterHelp staff. First, they will not speak to you on the phone. Then they refuse to furnish information necessary to get insurance claims paid. They did not have any problem taking over $1000 from me, but would not help in any way to get it reimbursed.

Good things come out of BetterHelp

By Courtney V., Minneapolis, MN, Verified Reviewer

A few years ago, I was talked into therapy when I wasn't fully ready for it by an ex. It wasn't necessarily a negative experience, but I was not ready to talk about my feelings to a stranger at that point in my life. From that point on, therapy left a bad taste in my mouth. Then, I found out through YouTube about BetterHelp. I was thinking about therapy seriously again at that point, and figured that BetterHelp was the way to do it just to dip my toes. I didn't even realize that I was paired with a counselor that only did messaging and no video or phone chats, which was wonderful. For me, I was (and still am) very afraid to go face to face with a counselor, but just messaging back and forth was perfect for me and still is. You're also able to change your counselor at any time for any reason, so if my current counselor doesn't work for me at some point, I'll be able to get a new one right away. I just can't recommend it enough!

First time with a counsellor - excellent experience

By Paul W., United Kingdom, Verified Reviewer

I first joined BetterHelp when I was in a crisis situation about a family disagreement and I was feeling suicidal. I have a long-term mental health condition, and I have never done any kind of counseling before.

The service was fast and helpful. I started hearing from my counselor pretty much immediately, and during our conversations, I gained new insight into my family relationships and also new and positive ways to cope with my mental health condition.

After working with the counselor for over a month, I felt happy with my mental state and discontinued the service. The counselor was very understanding of this and said she would welcome me back if I had a problem.

As it turned out, my medication was changed and I suffered severe symptoms and withdrawal. I signed up again with BetterHelp and my counselor began offering me advice and help with the situation. Even just having someone to discuss the problems with who will not feel uncomfortable or get upset when hearing about my symptoms was great.

I think anyone who is going through mental health problems should give the counseling with BetterHelp a try. You can get a 7-day free trial and financial aid discounts that can help. It has been a great help to me and should I feel the need to speak to someone helpful and who I can trust, I know I can speak to my counselor again. I would really recommend this service!

Couldn't recommend more, to be honest

By Alyssa M., Pennsylvania, Verified Reviewer

I've used BetterHelp on two separate occasions with two different counselors. Both times, they were outstanding individuals who helped me through so much hardship. I'm in a much better place mentally, and plan to keep talking to my counselor so that I can stay that way. I love this platform because I can be myself, talk as much as I need to, and get personalized attention from my counselor through sessions, goal setting, worksheets, etc. It's so nice just to have this person here for me to talk to whenever I need. I would recommend this to everyone, regardless of your situation. It's honestly just such a wonderful place to work through problems.

Counseling services

By Jasmine J., Killeen, TX, Verified Reviewer

I work in a high stress/toxic work environment that was eating away at me mentally and needed someone else to talk to. My boyfriend recommended counseling and told me about BetterHelp. I was skeptical at first, but compared to face-to-face counseling, he assured me that I’d save a ton and the extra benefit is that it’s at your hands and available to you 24/7! I’ve tried other services, and it’s not the same, BetterHelp even offers webinars! That’s what brought me back. Overall, I’ve only been with them a short while but it helps to vent to someone else and for someone else to be in my corner 24/7. I recommend giving it a try; you really have nothing to lose.

Excellent for keeping you on track in life

By Michael N., Virginia, Verified Reviewer

Yes, you pay a monthly fee. Some will consider it quite expensive.

But if you're matched with a good counselor, they will help you break through psychological barriers. They'll reveal psychological weaknesses that will help build your character and help you live the life you really want. This doesn't occur with any kind of quick fix, but the holistic approach of affecting how you make decisions.

How you make decisions determines everything about your life. Personal responsibility and power get put back in your hands. You just have to first admit that there's more you can do to help yourself. The counselor will take care of the rest.

I came to this website because I'm an entrepreneur who's an introverted workaholic who has anger issues and a social media addiction. My social media addiction consisted of making long-form posts that should, for the most part, be kept private and should be shared with a counselor from BetterHelp instead.

Within one week of speaking to my counselor, I was completely off of social media. I deactivated all of my accounts. This was a decision that literally led to me doubling my income in four days. On Monday, I quit Facebook. By Monday evening, all of the hours I would have burned on Facebook I put into applying myself to getting clients for my business. By Thursday, I had acquired several new clients that led to thousands of dollars in revenue that more than made up for the monthly fee. And I would not have made this decision without counselor Harry Gilley's guidance and suggestions.

I only speak for myself when I say that I've found that the best use for BetterHelp is when you want to accomplish something in your life and you can admit that you're the number 1 problem inhibiting you from reaching what you really want to in life.

You pay a monthly fee...but, trust me, if you're speaking to your counselor about the right problems, the monthly fee won't mean anything. Don't go to your counselor asking how to make more money. Go to your counselor asking what it is about yourself, the decisions you're making, the psychological inhibitors, that are preventing you from making more money.

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
