Extremely disappointed

By Jerry B., Salem, WI, Verified Reviewer

I am currently on a free trial. I scheduled an appointment with my assigned counselor for 9:00 am. At 9:01 I sent a message to my counselor as I did not receive a call and got no reply. The appointment has now expired, and my assigned counselor appears to be unavailable until next week after the trial period ends. I am extremely disappointed.

Don’t give these frauds your debit card number

By David C., Houston, TX, Verified Reviewer

My wife signed up my son for this service - he waited a week to be contacted by anyone and lost interest. No services used, and multiple phone calls and emails to try to stop the monthly charges.

Conveniently stupid customer service.

Billed fraudulently - STAY AWAY!

By Megan J., Virginia, Verified Reviewer

Watch out for this company! Fraud alert, billing for services not rendered! Be careful! Do not to give them your billing information, even if you never contract for any services, because you will be billed. I discovered too late that I had been being billed random different amounts, sometimes once a month and sometimes more, over a period of over six months, even though I never once actually used their services.

I called to complain, canceled my account and told them I wanted a refund. No surprise, the person who was supposed to get back to me never did, and nothing was ever refunded. I called again with similar results. I reported them to the credit card which had been billed, but it is unlikely I will ever be compensated for any of my losses because I did supply my credit card information. For some reason, once one does this, it doesn't matter what they do or do not provide - legally, they get away with pretending they provided a service and demanding payment. Again, STAY AWAY from this company! They should be rotting in cells somewhere. Grrr! Sorry. Just don't let it happen to you, and at least I will feel something I've done about it benefited someone. Thanks for letting me say my piece, and good luck.

False hopes for older people

By Sally A., Los Angeles, CA, Verified Reviewer

I recently went through a family crisis and wanted someone who could give me an objective take on it. I contacted BetterHelp and they refused to deal with me. I replied to their email and asked why. I received an overly-polite response, suggesting I wasn't a good fit, and that I might check with a one-on-one in-person counselor who took Medicare. Because I didn't say anything unusual in my initial contact or follow-up, I can only assume BetterHelp practices age discrimination and that I have been a victim of it. All I can think to do is spread the word to others my age, to save them the insult and possible injury due to this ever-growing form of discrimination. I also called my daughter, a marriage and family counselor, so she can let her clients and colleagues know. It's sad that things like BetterHelp show up online, but I suppose the internet allows anyone to pull just about anything.

Rejected help

By Michael B., Orange County, CA, Verified Reviewer

These people aren't real therapists. If your questionnaire reveals that you have any actual mental illness, they'll just tell you they can't help and give you a pathetic list of local therapists. Just for reference, a real service that can't help you (this happens a lot) will usually make at least some put some minor level of effort to recommend you to a different therapist or doctor. It's very clear that these people just want to get rid of you if you have a mental illness, not help.

Don't touch this organization!

By Vee B., United Kingdom, Verified Reviewer

My so-called counselor made a mistake over my package and even though BetterHelp admitted to this they still charged me. After a lot of wasted days, I eventually received a few unhelpful text messages and a standard print out that I could have obtained for free on the internet. A complete waste of nearly £150.

DO NOT GO NEAR THIS COMPANY!

Therapy in a can. Reading a book is more personalized.

By Bill S., Germany, Verified Reviewer

Paid for it, spent a lot of time writing about me. They totally ignored it, matching me with the antithesis of what I said I needed in a person. Now refuse to give money back, or even continue to respond. Complete farce if you ask me.

Scam

By Claire R., British Columbia, Canada, Verified Reviewer

They take $300, and you get no service. The fee is just to join whether you get counseling or none, you will still pay. Unable to sign the consent form. If you need to look for someone in person at least you will get something for your money.

Useless

By Cate A., Pittsburgh, PA, Verified Reviewer

This service was a waste of time. I was matched with a therapist and after 2 weeks of trying to find a mutual time to talk and then establishing an appointment, she canceled the day before. I was then matched with a second therapist who similarly canceled two appointments. The last time we were supposed to talk, I emailed him 15 minutes before the start time to confirm and he emailed me 30 minutes after the start time, with no apology or even acknowledgment of being late. I wrote lengthy emails to both therapists and they only replied saying that we should talk. So, I paid $45 a week for 3 months for 1 30-minute phone call. Totally not worth it.

Pointless therapy

By Jon S., Michigan, Verified Reviewer

Just yet more pointless "therapy". I wasn't challenged or questioned to find out more about what's wrong. Therapists are supposed to do more than just sit there and listen to a patient vent. Ask the right questions and find out what's wrong with me.

Oh, and homework? Seriously?

Worst service ever

By Sarah A., Kuwait, Verified Reviewer

So far it's been two days and I wasn't able to talk to ANYONE, no empathy at all, no one cares AT ALL. I tried also emailing customer service, still no response at all. I don’t understand how they would advertise this as 24/7 service and it's been two days without any help for my issue.

Counselor is a danger

By James P., Colorado, Verified Reviewer

I fear for my counselor's involvement in people's lives. I confided in her for months and she pulled a total heel turn. I recommend staying away from her at all costs, particularly if you are prone to hurting yourself. I think her licenses should be revoked and she should not be allowed to be in a profession where sick people confide in her.

She was a great counselor for the first two months. Then she went to EMDR training. She came back and talked down about every other option from her profile (CBT, etc.) and became frustrated when I raised concern about the amount of privacy I was able to provide myself for such an intense practice. I told her over and over that I wanted to do it once I secured a safe space. But she did not hear that, instead accused me of resisting wanting to dig deeper about my issues and suggested that I stop taking therapy. She became accusatory, petulant, toxic, manipulatory, and she straight up ignored what I brought up as genuine concerns, spun it and attempted to passive-aggressively, and aggressive-aggressively belittle me. Her tone was exactly the same as toxic people from my life that I had confided to her about which makes me believe she had ill intent for much longer than I knew...at the very least, her neglect is a danger to me and others. She made my life much harder. I now trust people less because of her. I will need to spend more money now to heal from the damage she has caused. She was my only support system and she knew it and decided to attack me over and over for two days.

On top of it all, she used the session options (phone, video, etc.) to manipulate me too. She refused to do video sessions once I raised concerns about the amount of privacy I could create to do EMDR. She called me instead of video chatting on all but one occasion. When we did video chat, her backdrop was a messy bedroom and an unmade bed, a far cry from what BetterHelp shows you during its advertising.

I fear for the safety of her clients. She pushed me further down a dark path.

Terrible. Avoid at all costs.

By Daniel B., California, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp has a lot of problems. The video session service didn’t work and the support representatives couldn't resolve the issue because their senior staff member kept trying to blame it on my "internet connection". Eventually, I figured out the actual cause was that BetterHelp doesn't work with many versions of Chrome. Thanks BetterHelp!

Oh and for counseling services are advertised as "monthly" except BetterHelp secretly defines a month as four weeks in order to shave a few days of service away from customers. ON TOP OF THAT, I went through ten counselors without seeing one who had experience with career-related issues, even though that’s what I kept requesting help with.

Don't do it

By Gabe A., Douglasville, GA, Verified Reviewer

The reality is therapy should be very personal. That said you should not do it online, go to a professional in your area.

This service feels like it's social media plus mental health. Which isn't good at all. The therapists are more worried about their reviews than actually helping you. They want a thumbs up instead of helping.

Don't do this, find a local therapist. Find someone who you actually connect with and go from there. If you want to do it remotely, then I guess you can go with this. Just expect your "therapist" to forget your problems because they will. They have probably another 100 patients on this platform so how much can they care?

Just understand, if you use this service you may get some benefit. However, if you have serious issues this isn't right for you.

BetterHelp was no help

By B B., Ames, IA, Verified Reviewer

It is difficult to see the difference between counsel from BetterHelp and a bot. During the 7-day free period, I shared detailed accounts of my life and what I'm struggling with. Feedback amounted to simple paraphrasing and acknowledgment that I was indeed struggling. After the hundreds of words I typed, responses (over 5 days) were exceedingly minimal and unhelpful. When I asked for more specific advice my counselor finally admitted she didn't know how to help me and suggested I find a new therapist.

If you need help moving on after being emotionally abused don't go to BetterHelp.

Lost time

By Elena J., Pordenone, Italy, Verified Reviewer

I tried texting and talking about a problem but for a 3 full days I was getting only automatic answers so I don’t understand what the point of me paying $50 per week and investing my time and effort if a therapist won't even read what I was talking about?! All in all, it's really bad, and I don’t recommend it at all.

Forget BetterHelp

By CS Q., Los Angeles, CA, Verified Reviewer

My therapist, Dr. Dallas C, was clinically inexperienced and desperate for clients. Admits that she gets overloaded with messages and it’s hard to keep up. Rather than limiting the amount of new clients she accepts, she would rather make clients wait for days on end and will just give you a quick, informal response to your question or problem. She copy/pastes generic responses which shows that she could care less about who you are or what you’re going through. She forgets details about who you are and will end up doing things like pronouncing your name wrong (for example). She doesn’t remember much about you since she chooses to have so many clients at once to feed her ego. This is not real therapy! If you are keen on getting real help, do not use BetterHelp. You get what you pay for. I’ve been in real therapy before, and yes, it can be expensive, but it’s well worth the hefty price tag for the amount of personalized, undivided attention you will get. Investing in a quality therapist in REAL life is an investment in yourself. Also, telehealth therapy is nothing like being in a real room with the therapist. If you want to really do therapy, do it the right way. Pay up, show up, and forget BetterHelp.

Complete incompetence

By Lucas L., Chicago, IL, Verified Reviewer

I optimistically scheduled my first therapy session through BetterHelp and was completely let down. My therapist failed to show up to the session, however, I went ahead and scheduled another to give the therapist the benefit of the doubt. She then failed to attend the second session as well. As a mental health professional, not showing up to a session (especially an initial session) is a show of complete incompetence. As someone struggling with my mental health, I am incredibly disheartened and sad that I spent a substantial amount of money to be entirely let down.
