Life changer

By Adrienne Charles, Michigan, Verified Reviewer

I keep seeing all these reviews giving this company a bad name, and I don't believe them. I had a 6-month plan, and I received all of my aligners on time with zero problems what so ever. My teeth are now straight just like they said they would be and I am completely satisfied.

The price is so much better than Invisalign. And traditional braces as well. I couldn't afford them growing up, so SmileDirectClub literally changed my life. Don't listen to the negative reviews because most likely they are dentists or orthodontist making these false reviews because they are jealous of SmileDirectClub's newfound fame and competition.

I am not a promoter nor do I work for the company. I am just a satisfied customer. If you want to know more facts, there is a Facebook group called "SmileDirectClub members." You should check it out because you will see over 12,000 members who are extremely satisfied like myself. I owe SmileDirectClub everything as they have helped me with my confidence that I have never had before.

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

No good, will take your money!

By Zoe, Myrtle Beach, SC, Verified Reviewer

So I paid for the kit and did perfect impressions, but I got an email saying it wasn’t deep enough, which is a lie and all they wanted was my money! And wanted me to buy ANOTHER kit, wasn’t even generous enough to lend me another one! Don't waste your money!

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Hi there, Zoe. We only reject impressions in the instance that they're too faulty to create a SmilePlan or aligners from. In many cases, impressions are too shallow, and we do need to see the full teeth and gum line in order to create an accurate model. This is determined by a licensed dental professional. If you have any additional questions, please reach out to us via grinners@smiledirectclub.com.

Shame

By Joselin B., Verified Reviewer

I went along and tried SmileDirectClub because I had minor teeth spacing that I wanted to be fixed. I went to the downtown location, got my scan, everything went well and smooth. It is $95 a month for two years. I received my aligners, did all 15 of them after about a year with them on. Finally! It was time to get retainers. I contacted them via Facebook about this and everything went fine. I got charged $95 for it, and it was sent out to me. I received them and I realized they were not as low at the gum area as the aligners. So they did not fit well at all. I contacted them, sent them photos and explained exactly what the issue was. They said they understood and they'll fix it. I got my replacement and it was exactly the same as the first retainers. I explained it again to them, sent more proof and they blamed it all on me.

I had already tried filing them down, even cut them with scissors and they did not fit well still. I guess they thought I was trying to get retainers for free out of them, which was not the case at all. I honestly wanted to stick with the plan, and have that perfect smile. They were no help, and they basically did not care. So due to their lack of attention, I did this entire process for no reason. I am still paying till this day for something that won't be permanent due to their nonchalant ways. Very disappointing. Their customer service needs a major upgrade. They definitely know how to rip people off, so it seems.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Hi, Joselin. Our retainers are made from the same files as the last aligner. In the event of a fit issue, we can certainly get another scan or impression set in order to create the retainer from that information. Please reach out to grinners@smiledirectclub.com if you'd like to speak further.

Scam?

By Isabelle M., Olympia, WA, Verified Reviewer

SmileDirect is now more than 2 months late with my first set of aligners. I still can’t tell if this is a scam. I have called approximately 7 times within the last 2 months, getting ahold of a different customer service worker each time. Almost every single person told me something different, but all ending in "You will receive your aligners in 4-5 business days." It’s supposed to take 4-5 weeks to receive my aligners and it has now been 9 weeks. I’m devastated because I wanted my teeth to look good on my graduation date. I will update if I ever receive them. I am also a little frustrated because in the 3D scan they provide online, my teeth don’t seem to be moving as much as I wanted them. But I did more research and learned that SmileDirect is only for minor improvements. I wish that would have been more clear in the beginning.

Hot mess!

By Paulette D., Arizona, Verified Reviewer

I received my box yesterday and it was a hot mess. The plastic containers were smashed in the box on top of the pre-packaged aligners which were on the bottom, I was ready to return to sender this disorganized mess. There were several items missing. I called the support number today and the representative was rather curt with me at first. She said it was the lab that puts the boxes together and that she would reach out to them. I am wondering if I just wasted $1850? She told me she would have the missing items sent and if there was anything else she could do to make me smile today. That won't happen, not a happy customer!

Not happy

By Daniel G., Winona, MN, Verified Reviewer

I started a SmileDirectClub plan in October of 2017 and met with a specialist in Chicago. I had some crooked teeth and was excited to give the plan a chance. They set me up with 7 months of aligners that I wore religiously for 21-22 hours per day. It was a pain to wear them every day and all day, but I kept thinking it would be worth it in the end.

After my 7 months were up, I noticed that my most crooked and visible tooth from the beginning that made me want to try the aligners hadn't straightened out at all. It was frustrating to think after 7 months that the tooth never straightened out. It was an upper tooth next to my 2 middle teeth. After calling SmileDirect, they said not to worry and sent me a home kit to make impressions. I followed the instructions and sent the kit in. After 5 or 6 weeks they sent me another set of impressions that I was to wear for 3 more months.

After that program ended, my tooth never adjusted. When I joined, I was told they had a money back guarantee, but when I asked, they told me the only thing they could do was to get me more aligners. This time I drove 5 hours to Chicago to see one of there specialists. She was very nice and said not to worry and that my teeth would straighten out after more aligners.

After 8 weeks, I received 6 more aligners that I was to wear for another 2 months. I finished the set and my front tooth is still crooked. The rest of my teeth did straighten out, but I was told I would have a perfect smile. My smile is much better except for the front tooth that is still very crooked. It's been 2 months since I finished the third try of aligners and haven't received any type of call asking how I'm doing or what my thoughts were. I never even got a call about a retainer for the other teeth that actually did straighten out. The plan is cheaper than a professional, so I guess you get what you pay for. 18 months of wearing their aligners and I still have some crooked teeth.

Then the pain was overwhelming

By Madison G., Montgomery, TX, Verified Reviewer

The first two months of aligners worked fine...but during the third month the pressure on my back left upper tooth became terrible.

It hurt so bad I could not wear the aligner. When my uncle called SmileDirect, they set up an appointment to get a scan at the Woodlands store. When I got to the store for the scan, they said the scan was not authorized even though we had an appointment. They took pictures and sent them to SmileDirect and then a man named Juan said my evaluation was rejected because the molars aren't supposed to move. But he would not explain why there was so much pressure on that molar. My uncle said he is going to have his attorney cancel the payments even if the attorney charges more than the remaining amount due. The pain is terrible. Watch out for these people.

Not willing help

By Laura H., Tampa, FL, Verified Reviewer

I really wanted to give my money to SDC. I know I have an unusual bite. So, I wasn't expecting anything unrealistic. They approved my teeth but then after reviewing my 3D 6-month plan, I did not like how far they pushed my bottom teeth. That would not look good on my face and could possibly cause future chipping of my front top teeth. After contacting my dentist and an orthodontist, they told me what to look for. And ask for. SDC was not willing to make any slight changes or information on why they couldn't have my front teeth not pushed way too far forward. I was hoping the customer service could relay my request to a professional instead of making the decision for them. I expected them to relay the message and then get back with me. But no. They just said the "Insert speech here" paragraph. I'm just glad there are many other places that will be willing to take my money - Byte, Clear Correct, Candid, SmileLove. I hope SDC continues to get better and stop wasting their money on dog aligners.

Hi Luara, thanks for taking the time to leave us a review. Clear aligner therapy does have some limitations, so we may not be able to adjust a customer's SmilePlan. Our dental team is available to chat and explain the SmilePlan to a customer and the reasoning behind it. If it's possible to have it updated, we will make that request, but it's not always possible since every customer is different. We aren't making dog aligners, it was just an April Fool's joke. Our focus is still our human customers. Please reach out to us at grinners@smiledirectclub.com if there's anything we can help with. Best, Madison.

Awful experience

By Allen C., Clemson, SC, Verified Reviewer

I went to a Smile shop to get scans and that went well. My first plan had an open bite and I contacted their customer service about it and another plan was given in about 5 days. Aligners were paid for and the production was supposed to start. The official production date of my aligners started 2/24/19, it's 4/15/19 and I have yet to receive my aligners.

I have contacted their customer service nearly every day trying to get an actual answer and have been lied to every time. If your aligners are late, don't believe into their lies that they are made to say. They'll tell you that they have escalated the concern and that they are "deeply sorry." My "ticket" that was supposed to "escalated to the production team" about a month ago. I was also told that the production of my aligners was "nearing the late stages" a month ago. They'll also tell you "we are working to the tracking information from the team in charge, as soon as we get it we will email you." Don't believe this either because it's another one of SDC's lie. I've been waiting nearly two weeks for that same email that's supposed to be emailed to me.

SmileDirectClub can't meet their demands and will lie to you so that they can stall as long as they possibly can. Other than the Smile shop experience, everything else has been awful. I feel as if I have been stolen from at this point. The aligner plan that was made for me was a 5-month plan. It's closing on 3 months in total and I haven't even received my aligners yet.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

DON'T DO IT

By Lacy E., Louisiana, Verified Reviewer

I have been through this process and found their claims to a quick and less expensive smile to be completely unfounded. My initial eval, OF COURSE, said retainers for only 6 months...well, 12 months later all I have to show are loose teeth that move within the first 2 minutes of having my retainers out. I am supposed to be well in my "retainers only at night" phase but that is impossible as my teeth are continually shifting back into their old position as soon as I remove my retainers. It is painful to eat because they are steady moving and actually feel like they are going to be pulled out. Forget biting into a burger or anything that's almost tough because you can actually feel your teeth moving around. I am afraid my tooth will end up staying in the food.

I am a very dissatisfied customer and have let SmileDirect know. Their only solution to me is to wear the retainers 24 hours day for "endless" months or follow up with my regular dentist to see if they will put in a permanent bottom retainer...at my expense of course! This company has no follow-up care so if your process doesn't go perfectly seamlessly, then you are screwed. I DO NOT RECOMMEND!

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Company Response from Smile Direct Club

Apr 30, 2019

Hi Lacy, thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We appreciate you sharing feedback about your experience. Some teeth can be stubborn and wearing a retainer longer than suggested may be necessary to keep teeth in place. A permanent retainer is very common and may help customers who have teeth that want to move back. A permanent retainer would be a one time purchase and would keep a customer's teeth in place, but customers do have the option to purchase a $99 retainer from us every 6 months. Regardless of the retainer chosen, the customer will be required to pay for it. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to us at grinners@smiledirectclub.com. Best, Emily.
