Hair La Vie Review: Is It Worth It?

By Lydia Noyes

Updated on: Oct 17, 2019

What Is Hair La Vie?

The Hair La Vie product line is designed to naturally repair, protect, hydrate, and grow your hair from the inside out. In other words, to provide “longer, faster, fuller hair growth.” Hair La Vie products are manufactured by La Muse Beauty based out of Los Angeles.

Hair La Vie’s products claim to be free of sulfates, parabens, synthetic fillers, dyes and preservatives, and other harmful chemicals. They are also purportedly safe for color and chemically treated hair.

Whether or not they’re the right product for you in relation to what they do and how much you can spend is the key to making a smart buying decision.

We’ll help you make that decision by analyzing Hair La Vie’s products, main ingredients, side effects, pricing, and customer reviews.

Product Lineup

There are 10 main products within the Hair La Vie Line:

Revitalizing Blend Hair Vitamins

As Hair La Vie’s flagship product, these daily vitamins infuse your hair with natural antioxidants and other nourishing ingredients to promote hair health. You’ll take one capsule twice a day, preferably in the morning and evening.

Key Ingredients: Saw palmetto, organic kelp, horsetail herb, collagen, bamboo, borage oil.

Clinical Formula Hair Growth Vitamins

These daily vitamins include a nutrient-rich formula that transforms your hair’s appearance. They contain a proprietary blend of 20 natural ingredients and 5,000 mcg of biotin.

Key Ingredients: Amla, reishi mushroom, flaxseed, bamboo, EVNol Max®, USPlus Saw Palmetto®.

Renewing Growth Treatment

This treatment provides your hair with a daily boost of clinically studied ingredients that add volume and repair hair strands to protect against loss. You’ll spray it onto your clean scalp and then comb it through your hair for balanced results.

Key Ingredients: Ecklonia cava, Capauxein™ G2, CAPIXYL™, fiberHance™ BM, Procataline Biofunctional, AquaCat™.

Nº 77 Leave-In Conditioner

This leave-in product hydrates hair during the day without leaving it heavy or greasy. You can apply it generously to damp hair and massage it directly onto the tips of your hair, working towards the scalp.

Key Ingredients: Keratin, horsetail extract, vitamin B5, silk amino acids, soy protein.

Shampoo

Designed to gently clean the hair and scalp, this shampoo boasts a fresh spa scent and a low-lather formula.

Key Ingredients: Marula oil, saw palmetto, silk amino acids, coconut oil, keratin, peppermint oil.

Conditioner

This conditioner claims to deliver salon-quality results to restore necessary hydration to hair strands. It’s designed to make unruly hair more manageable. Apply to the tips of your hair in the shower and let it sit for at least two minutes before rinsing it out.

Key Ingredients: Marula oil, coconut oil, horsetail extract, saw palmetto, keratin, peppermint oil.

Serum

This serum works to naturally hydrate, smooth, and style all hair types without coating your strands with silicone ingredients. The result is soft, touchable hair. Just apply to the ends of your hair when damp and finger comb through.

Key Ingredients: Argan oil, fractionated coconut oil, silk amino acids, coconut oil, jojoba seed, vitamin E.

Masque

This deep conditioning product will provide hydration while also strengthening your hair for results in just five minutes. Apply a small amount to your strands, focusing on the ends. Let it sit for at least five minutes before rinsing thoroughly.

Key Ingredients: Argan oil, keratin, coconut oil, avocado oil, bamboo extract, meadowfoam seed..

Organic Moroccan Oil

This 100% pure argan oil protects, softens, and de-frizzes hair. Pour a dime-sized amount on your fingers and rub onto the ends of your hair. You can apply as often as needed.

Key Ingredient: Argan oil.

PhytoCera

Not a haircare product, La Muse PhytoCera capsules contain phytoceramides (skin-benefiting antioxidants) that work to promote firmer, healthier skin under your eyes for a younger appearance. You’ll take one capsule a day, preferably with a meal.

Key Ingredients: Ceramide-PCD®, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E.

Do The Ingredients Work?

Though Hair La Vie’s products contain dozens of ingredients, the following four ingredients are an important factor in how well the company’s shampoos and conditions work.

To start, saw palmetto is a native North American shrub that grows about four feet tall. According to Consumer Lab, the plant’s berries have long been used to treat urinary infections and female breast disorders.

Today, it’s also used to address male pattern baldness, though the study results haven’t been impressive yet, and there’s little evidence it will do much for women.

Argan oil is another common ingredient within Hair La Vie products. Healthline told us this culinary oil comes from Morocco and has a high fat content that may improve hair health and reduce damage like split ends.

Both Hair La Vie’s shampoo and conditioner contain marula oil. According to Healthline, this African tree has a long history of use in traditional medicine.

You can extract oil from the tree’s nuts that is rich in protein and easily absorbed, which makes it a popular ingredient for hair and body products.

It’s considered especially beneficial for nourishing dry, frizzy hair that’s prone to breakage.

Finally, numerous products contain coconut oil. Consumer Lab shares that applying coconut oil to hair can prevent protein loss and cuticle damage.

The oil works to reduce the amount of water absorbed by the hair shaft, and it also adds lubrication that makes it less likely to tear during combing.

Side Effects

Hair La Vie doesn’t list any side effects for using its products. However, we learned from customer reviews that many people thought this brand damaged their hair. Some reported that the products dried their hair out and caused breakage.

The shampoo seems to be a polarizing product, as customers mentioned repeatedly that it was too watery to use yet still dried out their hair.

Analysis of Customer Reviews

Between all 10 Hair La Vie products, the company website featured hundreds of customer reviews at the time of our research, with an average rating close to 5 stars.

There, frequent compliments centered around great results and ease of use.

At the time of publishing, HighYa reviewers gave Hair La View an average of 3.5 stars after 58 reviews.

Those who liked the products wrote that they solved their dry scalp and dandruff problems, and left their hair looking and feeling healthy.

A few wrote that customer service was quick to respond to any quality concern issues and send them replacement products.

Others had less positive experiences. Some reviewers reported that the products were too runny to use or that they left their hair brittle and unruly.

A few also said that they felt like the daily vitamins were ineffective and that the hair care products were causing hair loss.

The Bottom Line

Is Hair La Vie worth adding to your hair care routine? This company makes sense for some people, but others might be happier going a different route.

To start, these products are expensive. Buying a bundle or multiple products can quickly bring your costs above $100 a month.

While these products seem to have quality ingredients, most of them are common across haircare brands and don’t necessarily make Hair La Vie unique.

However, we like that the company’s only auto-ship program is for the Journey Box, which contains the Clinical Formula vitamins.

This means you only need to reorder haircare products when you want to and don’t need to worry that you might forget about your subscription and get unexpected charges.

We like the Bundle options that Hair La Vie offers because they permit you to customize the products you receive and take advantage of cost savings by qualifying for free shipping.

Hair La Vie’s products might be worth the relatively high price if you’re looking for healthier-looking hair.

Just don’t expect them to perform miracles, and consider trying out small amounts to start to see whether your hair reacts poorly to them.

Best I've found

By Sally Beth, San Jose, CA, Verified Reviewer

Great article. I really like how you guys always break everything down.

I have had a problem with thinning hair for about 10 years now. As I've aged, it's definitely gotten worse. I tried the foam stuff you put on your scalp, but it burned something fierce. And I used Hairfinity for less than a month because I was breaking out.

I was really skeptical and did a lot of research on this. I looked at all the reviews on YouTube and Google. I checked out their website and liked the ingredients. I liked that it's natural and they donate to charity and whatnot, so I decided to give it a go.

I've been using their vitamin for about seven months now. My shedding stopped after about a month and a half of using it, and I began to see really thick, new growth at around two months. Everything I read said it takes time for the hair to be repaired and re grow. The first thing I noticed though, was that my scalp felt real clean and nice. I was so happy I could cry, and to be fair I did at one point. My hair is growing in stronger than it has in years, and I really do believe these vitamins have helped. I can put it up again without having to worry about my edges being too thin, or too much scalp showing. I can't tell you how great that feels. I'm actually looking forward to summer again, and so much so, that I started using their argon oil serum, and just got the shampoo as well.

I noticed you said that it's impossible for the shampoo to stop hair loss, but you're not accounting for the fact that the ingredients include the natural DHT blocker saw palmetto. That ingredient alone (I learned in all my research) is why I tried the vitamin. I read a study that DHT is a big part of hair loss, and the saw palmetto helps to stop the DHT from killing the hair roots. I think it can stop hair loss, maybe not as strong as the vitamin does, but none the less, I enjoyed my first few washes with it, and will report back in a few months with my full results.

As for the argon repair serum stuff, I really enjoy the smell. It smells like fresh linens or something, and I always put it on my hair last because it makes the frizz go away. It also leaves a soft feel and shine. I don't really know how much repair it does but I really enjoy it.

So far all my interactions with their customer service has been good. I call them and ask questions sometimes, and Sarah is always there to answer. The shipping seemed to take the normal amount of time, and I suggest you join their email list because they have a lot of sales and stuff, so I get my vitamins and whatnot when they are on sale.

My only complaint is that I do wish they sold bigger bottles of the vitamins. I can buy three or six bottles, and save money that way, but it just seems like it would make more sense to sell more pills in one bottle, right? Save some plastic, maybe this is something they can think about for the future. I might try the other products in the future, but for now I really am happy with the product and company.

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Scam

By Linda L., Evansville, IN, Verified Reviewer

After seeing numerous articles identifying this line as chemical free and "voted #1," I decided to try it. I started with the shampoo and conditioner. Two bottles arrived in a small cardboard box with absolutely no packing. Also enclosed were two pumps. The lid on each bottle appeared as though you could press the top to squeeze out product. No way. Both products were very, very, thick and I had to dig out the product with my finger.

After the first use, my hair was very dry, dull, and with no volume at all. But, I decided to give it a second try using the pumps. It took me 15 minutes to get the first pump to work. The second pump was not usable. Once again my hair was dull, flat and no volume. So I decided to return.

I called the 800-number and immediately realized there was no option to connect for getting a return authorization (a MUST). So I pressed "1" to place an order and was told I would be transferred to the appropriate department. No one ever answered on the "transfer." The same thing happened on two more tries. I went to their website to see if there was a different number to use and a "chat available" prompt appeared with the name Joey. As soon as I mentioned wanting to return, he never appeared!

So, I called the toll free number again and told the agent I was tired of playing games with them and proceeded to tell them I was going to dispute the charge with my credit card and then post my scathing review on Facebook. All of a sudden he didn't need to "transfer" me. He said he would email me all the necessary info to return the products.

The email did arrive and I will be returning the products. I paid $8.99 S/H to get the order and will probably pay double that to return. This is not a high-end purchase for me. I was attracted by the lack of chemicals. But I will be warning Facebook friends to think twice before buying these products. I would give this company and their products no stars for terrible customer service AND products.

False advertising

By Diana Terry Porterfield, Rockford, IL, Verified Reviewer

I tried the products as instructed. It did absolutely nothing for my hair. I called and was told since I had purchased the products past the ninety days I could not get a refund. I believe they pay models to say their products works. The products I purchased from them was not true to advertising. I would never recommend this product to anyone.

Don't waste your money

By Christine McKissack, Scottsdale, AZ, Verified Reviewer

I purchased two bottles of shampoo and conditioner and 90 days of vitamins. What a joke. The shampoo doesn't bubble, so it doesn't even feel like your hair is getting clean. The conditioner takes such a large amount, I used one bottle within two weeks, and it doesn't even prevent tangles nor soften your hair. I have taken vitamins all of my life and didn't notice one difference with the additional vitamins from Hair La Vie. Healthy, strong, shiny hair is very important to me in my mid 50's, and I was looking for something to maintain what I have and this product is false advertising and just stealing concerned woman's money.

Company Response from La Muse Beauty

Aug 7, 2017

We are sorry to hear that you did not experience the results that you were looking for while using our products. The lack of bubbles, or foaming is due to the fact, that our formula does not contain any SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate) which is an additive that allows cleansing products to foam.

According to the Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database, SLS is a "moderate hazard" that has been linked to cancer, neurotoxicity, organ toxicity, skin irritation and endocrine disruption. Hair la Vie is a natural hair care system. We are committed to providing products that are all natural and free of synthetic or artificial ingredients.

We understand that the lack of bubbles may seem strange at first, but we assure you that your hair is being cleansed. Most importantly, you are using a product that is all natural and is not harmful to your health.

Terrible Customer Service

By Michelle, California, Verified Reviewer

This review is based on the customer service I received during the return process.

Return advice: Make sure you send the product back within the ninety-days to receive a refund. You have to contact customer service and wait for them to email you a return authorization code. I would also recommend putting insurance on the package and requesting a signature. They take their time processing returns. Be prepared to wait at least a month for a refund.

Hair La Vie has absolutely the worst customer service department. Very rude and condescending.

I contacted customer service to request a return shipping label because two orders were processed without my knowledge or consent. I placed one order for six bottles of the hair vitamins. I initially was going to purchase three bottles and backed out of the order without hitting the final select button to confirm the order because there was an offer at the end of my purchase to upgrade to six bottles for an additional $50.00. Before I confirmed the upgrade I wanted to speak to a friend to see if she wanted to split the order. I decided to order six bottles instead of the original three. I got back online and placed the order. Did not think anything of the order until I reviewed my bank statement and noticed two charges. One for $107.00 and a second charge for $160.00.

No big deal (so I thought). I contact customer service and request a return label for the unauthorized purchase. Instead of being greeted with a "we see you are a repeat customer" and a "sorry for the inconvenience, we will be happy to mail you a return shipping label," I spoke to Angela who stated "we would rather lose you as a customer and have you return both orders at your expense than send you a return shipping label for the extra order."

Very disappointing. And the worst part about the situation is when I tried to contact someone else within the company I get Angela over and over.

I am not sure if this company values their, customers, but Angela is terrible for business and terrible to deal with.

I took my business to another natural vitamin company whose product is very similar to Hair La Vie and they do not have an Angela there to send condescending emails to customers. And they actually appreciate customer feedback and handle issues with orders promptly and without a nasty attitude.

Money Back Guarantee?

By Jill Burbridge, Iowa, Verified Reviewer

I tried the shampoo, conditioner and the hair masque. I was very pleased with the hair masque, however, I was very unhappy with how much shampoo I had to use to just to get a good lather going. (The bottles are extremely tiny for the price, BTW.) I decided to return the shampoo and conditioner because I felt they were way too expensive for the amount I was using. I followed Hair La Vie's instructions regarding returns and a refund. I returned the shampoo and conditioner over 6 weeks ago, and as of today, I have not received a refund. I have emailed the company a dozen or more times, with zero response, and still no refund. VERY dissatisfied with this company! Even though I really liked the hair masque, I will not buy from them again. I have been ignored, and I am still wondering if I will ever receive a refund.

Misleading and fraudulent

By Jennifer Jolly, Westminster, MA, Verified Reviewer

I'm not happy that I went to order ONE bottle of vitamins and almost $180 was taken out of my account! They way you order online is misleading. I am furious. It preselects a large quantity for you, so you think you are purchasing one bottle and wind up purchasing six! And of course, you cannot get them on the phone to discuss this issue with people.

The vitamins work

By Sheela Fox, Kansas City, MO, Verified Reviewer

I experienced hair loss due to DHT and I know this for sure because I went to a dermatologist and had a scalp analysis done and that was the verdict. My hair had stopped growing altogether. I performed extensive research and tried several different hair growth vitamins to no avail. I saw Hair La Vie advertised on my Facebook page and noticed that it said it had all natural ingredients and since I was desperate for my hair to grow back I gave it a try. I can sincerely say that I noticed my hair start growing back fuller and healthier after about a month and a half. I went from near baldness to a full head of hair after about 10 months. I have been taking Hair La Vie vitamins and will continue to take them because they are the only vitamins thus far that I have found that actually work for me. I would recommend them to anyone suffering hair loss, even men who experience DHT and baldness.

Beware

By Kim C., Casselberry, FL, Verified Reviewer

I had high hopes for this product, but it did not work for me at all. I had no reservations in ordering from them, but after reading the other reviews on here, I guess I should have. I returned all six bottles, but they claim I only returned five, so they charged me for one. I most certainly returned all six, but according to the manager, I am "incorrect." Unfortunately, I have no recourse, as I have no proof. This just seems like a way for them to charge unsatisfied customers for returned products. Super sad that a company would set the bar so low for their morality.

NOT a scam!

By Annette, Las Vegas, NV, Verified Reviewer

In January of 2016, I had come to the conclusion that I would be bald and started purchasing wigs to at least retain some bit of "normalcy." I had a thyroid condition that was causing major problems in my body including severe, uncontrollable, hair loss.

After having a thyroidectomy on 4/9/2016, I decided that I would give Hair La Vie a try because I had nothing to lose as they offer a full money-back guarantee. At that time the hair from the crown of my head was measuring 1/2 to 3/4 inches in some areas. The front of my hair measured 2 and 1/2 to 3 and 1/4 inches. I began taking the Hair Revitalizing Blend capsules twice-a-day, one with my breakfast and another about 6 pm with my dinner. I also purchased the Moroccan oil, shampoo, and conditioner from Hair La Vie and couldn't be much happier! My hair is soft and easy to manage. I don't have to relax it nearly as often, and it doesn't shed close to retouch time like it did before.

The hair in the back is 5 and 1/3 inches, and the front is 6 and 1/2 inches. My family and friends have all noticed and commented on how healthy, bouncy, thick and alive my hair looks and how amazed they are at the hair growth. I'm on bottle number 8, and I'm going to place an order for my mother. I can't even begin to express the gratitude I have for the people at Hair La Vie for such amazing products that ACTUALLY work!

Stick with it because you may not begin to see results until the third month, especially if you have extreme hair damage like mine. The hair goes through a healthy change that takes time initially, but hair growth actually begins about the third month, so be patient.

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Causes breakage close to scalp!

By Maris G., Santa Barbara, CA, Verified Reviewer

I have been using for about a month, shampoo and conditioner. I have no problem that it does not lather up. My problem is it leaves the hair tangled. I have never had so much breakage close to the roots of my hair. Now I have breakage all over. I was using Wen for many years and decided to give this a try. So sorry I did! It cleans well, but it has damaged my hair, a lot! Not pleased at all. It’s going to take a long time to get my hair back to normal. Extremely disappointed!
