Summary
BetterHelp is an online counseling platform that will pair you with a professionally licensed counselor. Access to counseling can be scheduled at any time, anywhere, and through any smart device. The efficacy of BetterHelp is linked to provider skill and intervention protocols, but there are some drawbacks if you fall into certain categories of needs and it’s not covered by your insurance provider.

I came to BetterHelp when I felt my stress was at breaking point. I feel like all aspects of my life were suffering, especially due to my self-esteem.
I was able to talk through my issues with my counselor, who provided me a judgment-free safe space to speak. Her insight and understanding of my issues allowed me to recognize myself better, and she provided me the tools I needed to make improvements in my life.
After 6-8 weeks of regular sessions, I feel so much lighter and happier. I feel more capable of taking care of myself, and I can recognize that problems that seem massive can be broken down and dealt with.
Communication was easy, there were different ways of getting in touch with your counselor and even a journaling section for those who are interested. I think overall it's a great platform and it seems to have capable people on board.
Length of Use: Less than 3 months
Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
Pros and Cons
Convenience - really helpful for the time-poor as well as those who struggle with leaving home
A variety of ways to get in touch
Taking your views and comfort into consideration for matching you up with counsellors
Too many notifications - I would like the option to choose where and which notifications I get - though I do see the point of it
Making the platform a little easier to navigate

The first therapist I had wasn't a great fit. I left BH but decided to give them another chance. I'm very happy I did. My therapist is amazing and I have gone further in my recovery than I thought I ever could. She pushes when needed and gives me space when I'm overwhelmed. She challenges my way of thinking. She creates a safe space and is very patient.
Length of Use: 3–6 months
Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
Pros and Cons
Accessibility - I can contact her between sessions
Pricing - affordable

Excellent. Very supportive and responsive, well-developed website, easy to use, great therapist. New mom working from home without childcare during COVID-19 - I don't have the time or ability to physically attend an appointment. This is the perfect solution; I can attend appts during naps! Also, super easy to work with you receive financial aid.

I like being an online counselor very much. I didn't think I would care for it as all my 23 years of previous experience has been face-to-face counseling. I like the immediacy of it, the ability to message my clients and give them worksheets in between sessions seems very therapeutic to me. The therapeutic alliance seems to be established more quickly as we are communicating in between sessions.
Length of Use: 3–6 months
Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
Pros and Cons
They are responsive to questions and requests by email
They offer free workshops and a counselor forum
They offer free counseling to their counselors
They pay for no-shows
They are sensitive to whether you wish to take a new case or wish to decline taking the case in other words, they give you the choice
Lack of forms such as a release of information
No contact person to call directly when needing immediate guidance
The session content is not saved

The two weeks I have been working with a counselor supplied through BetterHelp have been well organized and highly productive. I am especially impressed at how my counselor is very well suited for my particular needs.
We use what I call "the pen pal method" writing back and forth, but I am impressed with the variety of other options available. Writing back and forth makes sessions of variable length and whenever I need them, around the clock. I can also refer back easily without querying cryptic notes or straining to remember something which is already fuzzy in my memory.
My counselor always responds promptly to my notes with good practical advice. She responds to my comments and has supplied several very helpful charting mechanisms to enable me to gather data about a particular problem. For example, the "sleep diary" which asks useful questions and creates a week-long chart so we could have a thorough discussion of my sleep problem and make several very helpful adjustments. With her help, I am sleeping relatively well repeatedly for the first week in almost 5 months and it feels great!
I have several other areas I want to work on and she is helping me organized and be proactive there too. One step at a time.
I am particularly impressed with her constancy and flexibility in this time of COVID-19 pandemic when many health care workers are stretched thin. Working with her I have regained a sense of cautious optimism and learned new coping skills.
I rate Better Help "five stars"
I rate my Counselor as AWESOME.

I really like getting therapy through BetterHelp. It's kind of expensive, but they have financial aid that helps, and it's covered by my FSA, and that helps, too. I've been in face-to-face talk therapy multiple times, with multiple therapists and counselors, but I've had more progress working with Katie Smith (LCSW) through BetterHelp in 5 months than I have in 6 years of therapy.
I like the messaging system. I struggle to be concise, and the message-anytime format really works for when I have a big issue I need to talk out. I also struggle with talking aloud when I am really upset, so the text format helps me communicate better. Lastly, I like being able to write a message when I have an anxiety attack, just being able to talk through an attack helps, and I don't feel like I'm a burden to my therapist because I'm not calling her constantly in a panic.
I like how easy it was to sign up and be matched with someone who works well with me and who I click with. Also, the ease at which I was matched with someone who specializes in my particular issues. I struggle with finding a therapist that specializes in my issues in my area.
Regarding the cost, it's a lot more expensive than I would pay going to a face-to-face traditional therapist. BetterHelp is over double what I was paying at my previous therapist's clinic. However, I feel the cost is worth the quality of care I'm receiving.
The sessions are only 30 minutes, 1 time per week. I didn't know that going in, and it always takes a bit for me to open up in a session. Thankfully the messaging system mitigates this somewhat.
Length of Use: 3–6 months
Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
Pros and Cons

I've worked with several counselors and therapists over the last 2 decades. BetterHelp was truly better. The platform allowed me the human interaction I desired but also information and worksheets that helped me understand my problems and how I could solve them. Putting all this in one place helped me connect to the solutions in a way I have never been able to do before.
Length of Use: Less than 3 months
Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
Pros and Cons
Easy to sign up and get started
Personal interaction and in-depth education
The app is all the tools in one place
I paid for a block of time and didn't use all of it

Through BetterHelp, I was able to find the help I needed at a tough point in my life. My counselor was very receptive and made me feel at ease very quickly. Text, video, or voice sessions make this app very convenient and easy to adapt to. I would definitely recommend this app to anyone searching for an in-person therapy alternative.

I’ve tried ample in-person counseling services in my geographic location and never managed to connect with anyone or feel comfortable enough in the therapeutic relationship. With so many qualified therapists to be matched with and the option to rematch at any time, you are bound to match with someone who resonates with you and that’s exactly where I am right now. I feel supported and cared for. The BetterHelp app and journaling feature keeps my consistently grounded in my self-development practice. And at a much better rate than any in-person service could ever offer me in my home town.
Length of Use: 3–6 months
Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
Pros and Cons
Accessibility
Adaptability
Cost
Sometimes the server doesn't work well enough for video sessions
Their isn’t one place where I can find all of the documents my counsellor has sent me
You can’t book recurring sessions, I wish I could book at the same time each week but because you can only book one session at a time, the spot is often filled by the next week

I would highly recommend BetterHelp as a new way of therapy. I'm a lifelong client, and would steer away from traditional therapy after reading all about BetterHelp and the qualifications of their therapist, and the amount of therapists they have! This online therapy just makes sense with the whole COVID-19 social distancing. And a true blessing in my life when I found them because they do all the work to match you with a therapist and your therapist does all the rest to help you in all areas of your life. And then you're in a better place in your life just having known them. And I still feel they are underpriced for their priceless services and the areas the therapists are skilled in making them over the top. Any competition is not a threat, this company is in a different league. Hopefully they will get better known because I believe this counseling could benefit the whole world (if only they knew there was BetterHelp out there for them!).

I've used many in-person therapists throughout my life, and I can genuinely say I never expected that I would appreciate a teletherapy session as much as I do with BetterHelp. They provide the user with a mini-questionnaire about the type of therapy you are seeking, and the reason you are seeking therapy, and they match you with a therapist that suits your needs. The website says the matching process can be quick, for me it took a week. I was losing hope, but when I discovered my therapist specialized in my mental illness, and had the same college degree I did, I was thrilled. I am a month in (4 sessions deep), and I can wholeheartedly say BetterHelp is 100% the way to go.
Length of Use: Less than 3 months
Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I didn’t believe that online counseling could be as effective as face-to-face counseling until I tried BetterHelp. I was able to share my thoughts and ideas with comfort knowing that my information is confidential and I will never be judged by what I say. And you can have varieties of counselors that are specialized in what you need and for me that was a huge advantage.
Length of Use: Less than 3 months
Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
Pros and Cons
Different counselors with different specialities
Varieties of chat options (live chat, video, call)
The ability to write your private journals through the app and sharing worksheets with your counselor

The groupinars are just amazing and helpful
Customer service respond ASAP and they listen and validate your opinion and solve whatever issue you are facing as soon as possible
Great option for switching counselors if you didn't feel comfy or connected and they extend your subscription until you get another match, I love that

I was very skeptical about online counseling and spent a lot of time researching different options before going with BetterHelp.
After you fill out your information and questionnaire they offer you several options for counselors, or you can browse through the counselors in your state and request them, which is what I did. I've been to in-person counseling which helped but only for so long and after a while I felt as if I was taking up their time and like I was being pushed out. BetterHelp has never made me feel this way. From Day One I was able to start spilling about things that I'd never really opened up about before and it felt amazing. My counselor has been able to decipher even my most confusing ramblings and offer insight that I hadn't thought of before.
With BetterHelp you have the option to chat via messenger, have voice calls, and have video calls. You also have a journal option where you can write entries to get your thoughts down. These are not shared with anyone, even your counselor unless you share them with your counselor. I really like that I can hop on the website or on the app on my phone and write journal entries or message my counselor when things have come up that I don't want to forget or leave out. Knowing that when I'm struggling I have the option to send a message that will be responded to in a very timely fashion is reassuring.
Overall BetterHelp has really amazed me by how much I like it. There is a lot of support for the website and finding counselors, the counselors are very qualified and professional people that want to help you with any problem you're having. It feels like someone is always there for you when you need it. I would highly recommend this service to anyone that's in need of someone to talk to and might be scared or overwhelmed with the thought of going in person.

Totally worth it, very affordable, time-efficient, and reliable! You can choose your provider and change them as you see fit. The app is great and the scheduling is flexible and easy through the app. Messaging is 24/7 and your counselor will get back to you outside your weekly sessions or whatever plan you choose. You can do phone or video or chat sessions so it’s very convenient. I highly recommend you give it a try now. It’s fast and easy to get started. No need to fill out insurance info or anything detailed. You remain anonymous too, which is nice for some. The app is password protected so your sessions and journal entries are secure and highly accessible to you. That is a major selling point for me.
