BetterHelp is great

By Sabrina G., Chicago, IL, Verified Reviewer

I downloaded BetterHelp because I had been struggling to find a therapist in my area. I started hearing that BetterHelp has a bad reputation, but I still tried it out. I was matched with my therapist, and I knew that I could change at any time, but I really love my first pick. She messages me different techniques to try and is there if I need to message her about anything. There's also a place to do journaling to really channel the emotions and thoughts I'm having at the moment since BetterHelp is an app on my phone. It's convenient and it doesn't feel any different than therapy I've had in the past, it's just on video chat. It's so affordable too, like not even $200 for the whole month, and a lot of places charge $100 out of pocket just for one visit, it's insane.

Length of Use: 3–6 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

High quality therapist

Convenient

Affordable

If you have to cancel an appointment for any reason you don't get your money back since you pay for the month.

A revolutionary approach to mental well-being

By Felicity B., Kent, United Kingdom, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp was recommended to me by a friend and I will definitely be recommending it and revisiting should I ever need to. I’ve had a fantastic experience here. The touching base between sessions, tools/workshop, and journal sharing function are excellent. Thank you BetterHelp.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

That if you don’t gel with a therapist you can change, I did not need to use this but it’s so important.

The worksheets that I could complete on the app and share with my therapist.

Touching base between sessions.

The multiple options for contact.

My experience has been fantastic overall.

It is expensive, though again I do feel like it was so worth it for what I got so I can’t even really say that is a con, would just love it to be accessible to others.

I highly recommend Reanne as a therapist!

By Tegan D., Edinburgh, Scotland, Verified Reviewer

I signed up for therapy for the first time ever last month as I was struggling with anxiety, overwhelm, and feeling low following my job ending.

I was paired with Reanne following the online assessment and despite the initial nervousness that I felt at the unfamiliarity of being in therapy, Reanne’s calm, grounded presence made me feel reassured within the first session.

The safe space that she held for me allowed me to express my emotions freely without judgement and her compassion, warmth, and gentle guidance helped me release so many of the struggles that I had bottled up for so long.

It’s been one month now since I started working with Reanne, and honestly, the progress that I have made and the difference that I feel in my mood, my mindset, and my energy levels are remarkable.

I would highly recommend Reanne as a therapist to anyone that is struggling and needs support. She is amazing!

Don’t let TikTok stop your journey…

By Whitney S., Daphne, AL, Verified Reviewer

Great service

By Jackson W., Minneapolis, MN, Verified Reviewer

I needed help quickly and BetterHelp was so fast and easy to sign up for, and I was seen just a couple days later. My therapist was awesome, and it was a great fit right away, which I know is very lucky. I had to leave because its not covered by my insurance, which is by far my biggest problem with BetterHelp. I have to stop the service to try to find a therapist in network. But it was so nice to have help right away and to have it be so easy when times get difficult so quickly.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Quick and easy to sign up

The therapist I had was awesome

The matching of therapist to client seems to work really well

Doesn't take my insurance

So glad I found this

By Angela K., Palm Coast, FL, Verified Reviewer

I love my therapist. She is a very kind person and I am blessed to happen upon betterhelp.com. She suggested a good book, which really helped put things in perspective. The book "it's ok to not be ok" helped with a very high level of grief. I'm going to suggest my son to Christina Lopez-Ramirez. She is so easy to talk to. She gives great advice.

She also listens thoroughly when I'm talking. I think people like me appreciate being able to talk to someone without having to get up, shower, and drive to an office where you would sit with others in a waiting room. It is great for me because some days I don't even want to get out of bed. It is just me and my therapist. One-on-one. I already feel like we have made progress in such a short time. I will suggest betterhelp.com to many other people as well. Betterhelp.com just works for me and my life.

Length of Use: 3–6 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Immense therapy

I can do it from my home where I am comfortable

I found betterhelp.com and so far my experience has been great

I used to think therapy was a scam, until I spent two years on BetterHelp

By Cassie N., St. Louis, MO, Verified Reviewer

** Every person on this Earth CAN and WILL benefit from therapy, even if you think you won’t or don’t need it. **

BetterHelp was, is, and will continue to be the best decision I’ve ever made. Not a day goes by that I don’t feel grateful for all I’ve learned and the growth I’ve accomplished as the result of hard work and an incredible therapist.

If you’re looking for a sign, this is it. Between financial aid and the ability to switch therapists at no extra cost if your assigned one doesn’t work out, you really have nothing to lose.

Every human on the planet, even the most healthy ones, will benefit from therapy. Put in the time and work, along with some patience and positivity and you will become the best version of yourself possible. I know I did, and I was a stout believer in therapy being a total farce at first.

Length of Use: 2+ years

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Easy scheduling and communication

All worksheets and guides are saved so you can look back on them, as well as journal prompts and entries

Affordable, varying plans, financial aid if necessary

Ability to change therapists if you need to

Can schedule multiple appointments ahead of time

That I didn’t do it earlier lol

Great service, payment processing was garbage

By Kieran N., Canada, Verified Reviewer

Having the opportunity to reach out to a therapist 24/7 made me feel very heard during a time in my life where I didn’t have anyone else willing to listen. Additionally, having a group session and individual session every week was very helpful in keeping me on track. I also enjoyed the unlimited seminars I could take, and got a lot of perspectives from all 3 forms of therapy.

However, I experienced a lot of difficulty with payment. My payments were scheduled to go through every Sunday, however, some weeks they’d go through the Saturday before, and some weeks they’d charge twice. I’m still working with my bank to get it resolved, but I am incredibly disappointed. My account has gone into overdraft on several occasions because of the dual charges and overdraft fees. Up until then, the service was exactly what I needed, and hopefully I’m not the only one who has experienced this, so I see it fair to give it 4 stars.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Availability of my therapist

Frequency of therapy sessions/unlimited seminars

Therapist matching was very accurate

Payment processing - being charged twice a week sometimes

Price - wasn’t able to afford

Great experience so far

By Kelly T., St. Louis, MO, Verified Reviewer

I signed up for BetterHelp because I was looking for a therapist to help me work through some things. The sign-up process was quick and painless. I was able to select the traits that I was looking for in a therapist as well as my preferred format. I prefer doing video sessions, but there are other options available. I was matched with a therapist within 24 hours after I signed up and she met all of my preferences.

I’m not big on giving reviews, but the app is really well-designed. There is an area where you can journal and you can choose whether or not to share your journal entries with your therapist. I chose to share mine because it gave my therapist a chance to read more about what has been going on with me before our first meeting. I still use it to add things that happen during the week that I may want to discuss. There is also an option for group classes, but I have not looked into it.

Overall, it has been a great experience and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is in need of some help working through things.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Easy sign-up process

App is easy to use

You are able to customize the experience to fit your needs

They don’t accept insurance, but I am able to pay using FSA funds

Therapy is immediate but app issues are irritating

By Lizzie R., London, United Kindom, Verified Reviewer

The BEST fast access to therapy I've ever had. Got it right when I needed it. Love the options of live chat (like the old msn days), phone, or video call. This made it really accessible for me as someone who easily feels judged and becomes more concerned about the therapist's opinion than my own.

BUT the app was faulty for 8/10 sessions with problems with the connection, microphone, kicking you out if you swipe off the page even for a second when using the live chat option, and more. It's also pay-per-month/week rather than per-session so you could be wasting money if you can't book a session every week.

AMAZING customer service via email (with Mia) who helped with all issues and found me a new therapist who is the best (Jasmine Blue).

But the faults make it unusable for me. Hope you have a better experience and find the help you need.

Length of Use: 3–6 months

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Quick access to therapy

Very helpful customer service via email (Mia)

My therapist Jasmine Blue

Faulty app issues with connection, microphone, delay between messages

That everything has to happen through the website and you can't just can't just text your therapist from your phone

Payment per month/week rather than per session

Great therapist, and great customer service!

By Joella D., San Diego, CA, Verified Reviewer

I am honestly amazed at the customer service I have received from this company. The staff has gone above and beyond! I am so grateful for their quick, kind, and helpful responses. My therapist Donna has been a good match for me, not only has she helped the way I think about things but she is real person. I like that she’s got personality and doesn’t come across as a generic robot. I am genuinely happier than I thought I would be with this. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but everything has been better than I imagined.

Experience of a lifetime

By Gian F., Lancaster, PA, Verified Reviewer

I came into BetterHelp with no prior experience with a therapist. Matthew Miller was the very first person assigned to me and rest was history. Through all the guidance I have received from Matthew, I was able to identify and dissect the root of all my issues from childhood up until now. Going to therapy even went as far as rejuvenating my desire to read along with picking up new hobbies (e.g. playing an instrument and hiking). I could practically write a book about therapy at this point. Case and point is that I have gone from being a passive advocate for mental health to someone who believes every single person should see a therapist at least once in their lifetime. I would recommend BetterHelp to all of my friends and family, and I most certainly will be returning, whether it be next month or next year. A huge kudos to those involved with the creation of this godsend of a platform.

Length of Use: 6–12 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Flexibility with scheduling a session

The system used to match you with a therapist

Lifelong knowledge acquired through therapy

Being able to text your therapist at any time

Being able to switch therapists at any time

The availability of financial aid

Outstanding customer support team

Three different subscription plans to choose from

Being able to pause/resume your subscription and return to the same therapist if you want

Should offer more subscriptions plans, including a bi-weekly plan

You may possibly not be matched with the kind of therapist you want at first (e.g. male or female)

Feeling better!

By Amy S., College Station, TX, Verified Reviewer

I've had a good experience with BetterHelp. I like being able to put my feelings into writing and I like being able to message and chat with my therapist. I always have something to consider at the end of a therapy session and I feel confident things are going to keep getting better. I want to stick with it and get to the things I can't see yet but know are there.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Having a space for ME

Confusion about memberships

I don't like the video option

Transitional

By Kiri T. , Appleton, WI

I was skeptical about using an online platform for therapy, but BetterHelp knocked my socks off. I had a decent therapist, but took a chance and switched to someone who GETS it for the first time in many years. My therapist is extremely supportive and helps me challenge my negative thinking patterns to heal from my past trauma and affect real changes in my daily life. I’m deeply grateful and highly recommend giving BetterHelp a shot for anyone who might be on the fence.

Length of Use: 6–12 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Ability to chang therapists without pressure or explanation.

Convenient scheduling outside of my work hours.

A+ match for an ideal therapy relationship.

I wish I could use my insurance — it would save me a lot of money.

Amateur therapists are going to cause suicide

By L W., San Francisco, CA, Verified Reviewer

I want to report my therapist. I am a patient seeking help and advice for my depression, lack of confidence, and trust issues, and she just made it WORSE. She spent the session telling me to set boundaries and then when I tried to set one little boundary with her, she flips on me and says I’m aggressive and should find another therapist? This platform is going to cause worse mental health and drive someone suffering to suicide one day, if not already. I am extremely upset and don’t know if I can ever open up to a therapist ever again to get the help I need.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

By Quiana A., Charlotte, NC, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp has been the best way for me to seek the help I needed, when seeking therapy, the “traditional” way kept letting me down. What’s better is they even offer financial assistance and the ability to switch therapists, if the one matched didn’t meet your needs. I’m so grateful for the ability to bypass having to call around for days to find a good therapist with availability.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Overall, would recommend.

By Ashley F., Cornwall, United Kingdom, Verified Reviewer

I have found the service itself, email support (office), and the staff responsive, friendly, and helpful. My first therapist was good but unfortunately left BetterHelp. However, I was matched with another therapist, who is proving more beneficial than the previous. I like that you can message/journal at any time. I also appreciate the ability to pay for an extra session in a week during those hellish times. And actually, I was surprised to find that the cost of the second session was less expensive than I had expected. I did a lot of the webinars in my first few months as well, which were mostly pretty good.

I didn’t give it five stars because I had to change therapist after about 4 months, the app isn’t available, and the website video chat doesn’t work on a kindle, and it’s not cheap. Not that therapy is cheap anywhere, to be fair.

Length of Use: 6–12 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

One good and one excellent therapist

Ability to message at times of high stress

Friendly and helpful office/email staff

Cost

Inability to use on kindle

Total waste of time and money

By John O., Charlotte, NC, Verified Reviewer

They need to be more specific about their therapists. She wasted over a month of my time. I was very clear about what I wanted to accomplish and had to wait 2 weeks for an appointment (oh, and the only time she sees clients are on Friday nights which I wasn’t told until I met with her on the first appt 3 weeks later because she canceled my first appointment!). Then we agree to do therapy in the way that I clearly stated upfront and then a month and a week later she tells me that I should change therapists. Total BS and a total waste of my time and money!

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

They did not tell me that the therapist only had Friday evening appts

If it’s $320 a month and you are only able to speak to your therapist 2 times a month, it’s a ripoff

Therapy with ease

By Lisa B., Greenfield, CA, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp is well established on their website. It's easy to use and they do a thorough job of gathering your information to match you with a therapist you'll do well with. I like that I can have sessions with my therapist via phone or video and can message her at any time. I can also journal and choose whether or not to share my writing with my therapist. It is more affordable to me than seeing a private therapist off-line, more convenient, and more flexible to suit the time I am available. I highly recommend them.

BetterHelp is the best

By Lori N., Mississippi, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp has been a truly positive experience for me from my very first encounter, which involved a questionnaire that helped them to match me with the outstanding therapist that I now have, who shares my Christian values and is so professional and insightful.

My therapist has helped me to gain a workable knowledge of how past events both helped and hurt me in my struggles and victories that encompassed my journey as a teenager with anorexia and PTSD. He is a very good listener and asks the right questions that lead me to investigate both my past and my present. I have now begun to feverishly copy down what was said during the session and explore the questions that he asked me, and practice the panic attack breathing exercises and other suggestions that he has made. As a result, I have gained a much better insight into those areas in just 3 sessions than I ever have had before with a therapist. I have even recovered lost memories that now fit pieces of the puzzle of that time in my life that confused me before. That's a sign of a good therapist. I owe my utmost gratitude to Samuel Johnson for helping me gain those insights.

The choices of having a live video chat or a text chat are nice, as I can text much more openly and descriptively than I could if my husband was listening to every word and trying to gaslight and mock me. I have also always shown much more strength in writing than in expressing myself verbally in front of someone, so texting is a win-win for me. Otherwise, a face-to-face session can also bring out my shy nature, causing me to lose my train of thought and leave out details that could be important. This is a very unique feature that I love so much.

The 24/7 access to therapists is also a very nice and unique feature for emergencies as well, although I don't plan to use it except to respond to my therapist's check-ins. I know that my therapist has a very busy schedule, so I try to respect that. Still, it is a comforting feeling to know that a real person would actually respond to me if I was in a dire crisis.

I have never had a therapist before, either, that would send me a text just to check on how I was feeling and wish me a blessed day. That is so kind and helpful, in that it encourages me to keep working on my issues.

I also love the self-help videos and live chat sessions with BetterHelp members on various topics. It is nice that you have a while to access the videos if you are not able to view them live.

Choosing BetterHelp is one of the best decisions that I have ever made, and I am beginning to see a light at the end of the tunnel, even though I know my journey will still take a while to heal from and that I will most likely have to face some of these challenges from here on out. I feel that God heard my prayer and led me down this path. BetterHelp has made me a stronger me, and that is a very good thing.

Isaiah 40:31 - "But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and be faint."

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

They matched me with the perfect therapist, who shares my Christian values and has expertise in anxiety, depression, and trauma issues.

The ability to chat via texts, because I can express myself better in writing, which helps my therapist understand my situation in a better way.

Text chats also allow me to speak privately without being spied on and ridiculed by my husband.

Having the ability to chat with my therapist anytime, if a crisis situation should arise.

My therapist sends me a chat to check in between sessions and it makes me want to work even harder on my issues.

The video live chat sessions are nice, in that you can join live and ask questions.

I like that you can watch the video playback later if you can't join the chat.

Simple. More friendlier type of therapy.

By Brittany W., Thomasville, GA, Verified Reviewer

This was a very good app. Gives more of a friend approach to therapy. I had a very good therapist that would check in with me. The video calls were easy to do and understand. The journaling part wasn't easy. Sometimes it would work and sometimes it wouldn't. You have the option to join other group therapies or workshops. Also, my therapist sent me worksheets to work on and there was an option to share your journal entries with your therapist.

I just couldn't keep up with the app. I forgot about it and because of my other doctor appointments, I could only do video calls on the weekend and my weekends were full. It could definitely work and be easier for others.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

The messaging back and forth was easy

The video call was easy to do

I had a very good therapist

I couldn't figure out how to write in my journal

I had a tendency to forget about the app or messages
