Helpful and simple

By Kathryn T., Western Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, Verified Reviewer

Simple and easy to use app. Has lots of features. Can talk in a text format whenever you want. Video chat weekly which is good. Separate section to write notes or diary entries not seen by the therapist and also additional resources can be added by the therapist like "homework". Easy to use and psych is professional and willing to be flexible, which is great.

Length of Use: 1–2 years

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Easy to use

Can talk to her when I want to

Video chats are great too

Can only video once a week

I don't have anyone to talk to when she's on holiday

Reasonable price for mini therapy

By Missy B., New York, NY, Verified Reviewer

I was originally matched with a therapist who had a full 2-week wait time for video chat. I was refunded my first week and switched counselors. I still had to wait a full week for video chat with the second one and they are only 25 minutes. That being said, I think it's worth the money if you only need a touch up per se. Also sucks that they charge monthly upfront.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Can change counselor easily

Asks what your concerns are to match with someone

Messages as well as video chat

Week plus wait time to start with a new counselor

Short video sessions

Membership billed monthly instead of weekly

BetterHelp counseling service review

By James N., Miami, FL, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp has been an amazing experience and it is definitely worth the self-investment! The counselors they have on their team are amazing and I have made some groundbreaking strides in my life and in my relationship due to my counselor's help. I convinced my partner to sign up and she is going through counseling as well via BetterHelp. The website is easy to navigate. They offer digital communication platforms directly with your counselor. You can also keep a digital journal that you can choose to share with your counselor if you so choose. Counselors communicate with you via chat, phone, or video call. I communicate via phone, it’s my preferred method of communication, and the sessions are once per week for about 30-45mins. I look forward to my session more and more each time. My counselor also shares YouTube videos that help teach me how to be better in whatever area I’m seeking help in.

I highly recommended BetterHelp to anyone. I have told all my close friends and family about this company. If you’re on the fence about counseling, BetterHelp is a no-brainer! It has been life-changing, and to think I was raised in a society where it was weak to seek counseling. I’m glad I stepped outside of that box.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

The quality of counselors

The easy access to the resources BetterHelp has to offer

The reasonable price

The easy of signing up and getting in the system

Sometimes the quality of the call can be a little low, nothing too bad though

Sometimes your counselors schedule can be pretty booked, but typically they have availability every 7-10 days

Sometimes their system can go down, which might set your counselor's schedule back, making them a little late for their appointment (only had this happen once)

This is a really neat tool. You can remain anonymous if you prefer. You can see your counselor's training and certifications, as well as a bit about them and any reviews they have. They have a variety of options, from chats, to calls, to video meetings. There is a journaling feature as well.

You can either text your counselor, phone chat or video chat, and I love the versatility that takes into account what YOU are comfortable with. You can journal if you want and keep it private or share it with your counselor. You also get to specify what you would like preference wise for what counselor you get, like if you want someone who's the same gender as you, or who shares the same religious background, etc.

Convenient therapy at my fingertips

By Mal F., Los Angeles, CA, Verified Reviewer

I decided to use the services provided by BetterHelp based on reviews by both clients and therapists. I had been needing therapy for a long time, but was scared to pull the trigger. During the first few months of the quarantine of 2020, I found myself waking up full of anxiety, depression, helplessness, and anger. I knew I couldn't let any excuses stand in my way anymore. I matched with my therapist and immediately jumped in. She allowed me to lead the therapy in the direction that I needed most and after just a couple of weeks, I already feel encouraged, motivated, and optimistic for the future. I adore my therapist and am so proud of myself for making my mental health needs a priority. I love that I can do it on my own time and from the comfort of my home. Typing out my thoughts has been an extra bonus because it forces me to reflect on what I am saying and feeling. I find myself looking forward to my therapist's responses and therapy has become one of my favorite parts of my day. Forcing myself to take this step was the best thing I've done for my quality of life in a long time.

Saved my sanity and my life

By Mary G., Atlanta, GA, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp has changed my life. Before starting therapy I was stuck in unhealthy behaviors and patterns. The first counselor they matched me with has been a huge success for me. My therapist Mignon is so sweet and understanding. She has guided me through some big life changes and made me feel like I can handle it. Therapy on this platform has shown me new strength I had deep down but never knew I did. I know how to cope with my anxiety now, where before it was debilitating. I use mindfulness and all the other techniques my therapist taught me. I feel like I’m finally healing for the first time.

Length of Use: 3–6 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

The ease of contact with my therapist for sessions and the messaging feature

The app platform makes therapy feel laid back and not as serious, even though therapy is a serious step, but this makes it feel less scary

I get to chat with my therapist from the comfort of my own home, it makes me feel safe and less nervous

You can’t sift through the therapists to choose one

Help with anxiety

By Vegard F., Oslo, Norway, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp has been a safe place for me to share my thoughts and feelings, my struggles, and my successes. As I'm struggling with anxiety, being able to chat over text is really helpful. I might do a video call in the future, but thus far chatting has been my preferred way to get counseling.

I feel understood, cared for. The conversations have helped me find more clarity and direction. I feel like I have more control over my life and that I'm better able to live with the difficul thoughts, feelings, and life experiences.

Thanks for BetterHelp, try it yourself!

Pros and Cons of BetterHelp

By Jonathan L., Nashua, NH, Verified Reviewer

I've been to numerous counselors throughout my life for the past 20 years or so. Some of the issues I have faced were (starting from when I was younger up until now) my parent's divorce, depression, anxiety, my own divorce, couples counseling, relationship issues, and now sexual and gender identity issues. I'm going to give you my honest opinion of BetterHelp and it won't just be some B.S. coming from a robot.

Full disclosure, my motivation for writing this review is because they sent me a free t-shirt; however, this was just a kind gesture by them and I want to return the favor. The t-shirt is not in any way shape or form payment for me writing reviews for them. It'll take a whole lot more money than a free t-shirt for me to sell my credibility. Also, you might see this review on a bunch of different sites. It's because I'm too lazy to write individual reviews for each site so I'm just going to copy and paste on the sites BetterHelp suggested I could help them out on. I hope this doesn't come off as illegitimate to you. So without further adieu, here we go.

You can do counseling on your own schedule by chat, phone, or video. And you can leave messages for your counselor that they will respond to.

My counselor (at least) follows Cognitive Behavioral Therapy methods, which are good best practice standards for psychology and not just B.S.

Unbiased - My counselor and I have not seen eye to eye on every subject we've discussed. I've talked about some very controversial subjects that they disagreed fundamentally on with me such as whether or not there is a wage gap between men and women. Even though we strongly disagreed on the evidence, my counselor has never held a grudge. She handled the discussion professionally while still giving a good opinion and staying focused towards my treatment and not getting caught up in the details.

Price - I used to spend $120 a week going to a counselor in real life (with insurance). BetterHelp is less than half of what I used to pay (I believe it's $45 a week) and they offer more service than my IRL counselors ever did.

Privacy - For me, I live alone so there's nothing better than talking to a counselor from the privacy and comfort of my own home. Though I guess if you have a full house with kids and relatives and whatnot this could be considered a con as there is not really a good place to escape to from prying ears.

Reminders - They send you text reminders on your phone of when your appointment will be.

The web interface - Makes it easy to schedule appointments, connect with your counselor, write to your counselor, share attachments with your counselor, etc. It's pretty snazzy.

Connectivity can sometimes be crappy on VoIP calls. I have experienced some small issues with my counselor either coming through poor quality or disconnecting from the call when using the web interface. Typically though, she calls me right back and there has never been a catastrophic failure where we were not able to get reconnected and continue the counseling session that day.

Availability - My counselor is only available for phone/video sessions Tuesdays and Fridays. My schedule works fine for this. I'm not sure if all counselors on BetterHelp maintain this schedule or not, but this would not be very flexible for some people.

Length of Use: 3–6 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

BetterHelp is great for easing into counseling

By Phoenix N., Colorado, Verified Reviewer

I was recommended BetterHelp by a friend of mine who also gave me two weeks free, which was perfect because I wasn't sure if counseling was for me, especially after being emotionally burned a couple of times as a kid. The questionnaire is so helpful if you're honest about what you need help with because I found my perfect match for a counselor on the first try, and BetterHelp really takes the time to listen to your needs and match you with someone who cares about you as a person not just a paycheck. They're very non-invasive and there's a variety of options to have meetings with your counselor. They're also super willing to help you with financial aid. Healing definitely doesn't happen overnight, but BetterHelp has made me feel better than I have in years.

I have had a great experience with my counselor from BetterHelp so far. The initial questions were great and made me feel valid for including my sexual orientation as an option for consideration when matching me to a therapist. Being able to text my therapist my thoughts has been very helpful too. Overall, I enjoy the platform and don’t know if I would ever deal with a physical counselors office again after the convenience of BetterHelp.

Super happy!

By Lorely D., Orlando, FL, Verified Reviewer

I have loved using BetterHelp to start my therapy journey, for the first time! It was very easy getting matched up with a therapist and getting my first session set up. It is so convenient being able to message my therapist, Erica, whenever I am going through a rough time during the week and having her respond within a day or two. I also like being able to have a video chat every week instead of having to go into an office.

Surprised

By Ashley F., Oklahoma City, OK, Verified Reviewer

The price is more than fair so I got it but was skeptical. They matched me first with a therapist who didn’t offer video chat sessions which is what I prefer. It would be nice in the initial questions if they asked your preference on that. I had trouble with figuring out how to request a new therapist but emailed BetterHelp and they got back with me fairly quickly and resolved it. A couple of days later I was matched with my therapist and scheduled my first session. I was nervous it would be weird or awkward and my therapist got right into the session and made me comfortable. I was able to tell her things I wouldn’t typically tell other counselors in the first session. It was like FaceTiming my friend. She checks in on me and so does BetterHelp all the time. It’s honestly a great service and I do recommend it!

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Can’t catch COVID

No gas expense or traffic to fight

My therapist reminds me of me

Intro questionnaire should find out about counseling type preferences and deal breakers

Online customer support could frustrate certain people

If a therapist only offers text sessions I honestly don’t think BetterHelp should allow them

A variety of ways to access therapy

By Amy M., Elkhart, IN, Verified Reviewer

I had established a relationship with a counselor several years ago and she moved out of the area. When she became connected to BetterHelp, I was able to reconnect with her and not start over with someone new. I like being able to connect in a variety of ways; video, calls, or messages. When my counselor has been on vacation, BetterHelp has extended my prescription so I don’t have to pay for unused weeks. The video connection has not been the best at times but may have more to do with my internet connection.

Length of Use: 3–6 months

A great way to do counseling

By Amy S., Berwyn, IL, Verified Reviewer

I started with BetterHelp when a program I had just started and worked with for 2 weeks suddenly dropped me like a sack of potatoes so I searched for something to take over for it. I found BetterHelp. Listened to some YouTube reviews of the program that said it was bad. But I gave it a try. Eight months later I am still working with them and feeling better than ever. Once you find the perfect person it works great.

Length of Use: 6–12 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Easy communication, you can talk to your counselor even in between visits via a website messenger system

No need to leave home, you can do your sessions right from home by phone, video chat, or by messenger

You can only book one session at a time so your session dates and times may fluctuate unless your counselor makes sure to book you for specific times

I love BetterHelp!

By Jonathan B., Pittsburgh, PA, Verified Reviewer

I first heard of BetterHelp through the Mental Health Happy Hour Podcast in 2018. I found an LGBTQ+ counselor to help me work through sexual issues and we had a video call. Unfortunately, I was unable to continue my therapy after the introductory session. Two years later I tried again and was matched with Vincent P. He is certified in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and sessions with him have been AMAZING. As a side note, I enjoy having phone sessions instead of video sessions because I feel free from pressure to "perform." I was scared to continue and pay for sessions, however, Vinny's counseling was truly the cream of the crop so I took the chance. And when I signed up, I was able to receive financial assistance! Of all my subscriptions, BetterHelp is the one I would save! The accessibility and quality of service (from Vinny to the journaling feature to the email support) have kept me as a BetterHelp customer.
