TAPfit Review: A Detailed Look

TAPfit is a dance fitness program that utilizes the principles of tap dance to get you moving to a beat—no prior dance experience required.

This innovative fitness program was founded by four Australian sisters, all of whom are tap teachers who graduated from the Les Griffith Tap Dance Academy and have diplomas from the World Tap Dance Championships in Reisa, Germany.

This program purportedly builds on their expertise to give you a full-body workout that combines dance moves with cardio, conditioning, and strength training to get you in shape.

To maximize your experience, you should wear TAPfit’s patented taps that fit over your gym shoes to add a beat to every move you make.

In this review, we take a detailed look at TAPfit to tell you if it works and help you decide if it is right for you.

Is TAPfit a Good Way to Exercise?

An instructor guides you through every step of TAPfit workouts to ensure that even beginners can figure out the moves.

The brand claims that all steps are low-impact and safe for a variety of fitness levels while ensuring you get your heart rate up for maximum calorie burning—even up to 800 calories per hour.

That’s a claim that Dr. Aragona, a general practitioner and family doctor at Prescription Doctor challenges. “From a medical and health perspective, tap dancing can be great exercise,” he shared with us.

“On average, tap dancing burns around 315 calories per hour, so a usual 2-hour class would mean you have burned 630 calories. If you take those classes over multiple days of the week, you will have burned a lot of calories overall.

“Unfortunately, the claim that it is 800 calories in one hour is false, even an exercise such as running can only burn around 600 calories an hour, and that is a more intense workout for the body overall.”

Features and Options

TAPfit currently offers two ways to join the experience: an online subscription or a DVD bundle purchase.

TAPfit Online

Access TAPfit’s content anywhere with an internet connection with TAPfit online. You’ll get access to over 100 dance workouts in multiple programs with nutrition plans and recipes that are updated weekly.

The company also shares a schedule of live classes so that you can plan to tap with others in real-time.

Cost: $27/month, all new subscribers receive a seven-day free trial.

TAPFit Transformation System

If you’re not a fan of the subscription model, you can purchase TAPfit transformation systems. You’ll get DVD access to dozens of workouts as well as the fitness equipment needed to get started.

TAPfit Taps

The company’s patented taps have a non-slip runner grip and fit over the sole of any flat-bottom shoe to turn them into dance shoes. They feature stainless steel taps on the heels and toes to produce a distinctive click with each step.

It’s not currently possible to purchase these taps or floor mat without buying one of these three systems.

My Experience with TAPfit

The sign-up process was very simple and I was ready to go within minutes. The TAPfit online portal has a simple layout, with a welcome message and six weeks of classes available on the main page.

You can personalize an online profile by adding photos, joining groups, and connecting with other members. You’ll also gain access to all seven TAPfit courses:

I’m a complete beginner to tap dance, so I started with the TAP Basics class. Instructor Kat Johnson introduced the steps slowly and thoroughly articulated every move so I felt comfortable following along.

Honestly, though, the dance routine wasn’t much fun when I performed it barefoot on the carpet; the brand’s tap shoes and dance mat seem essential to having fun with this workout.

The week one tutorial class built on the basics with a simple warmup and pump up music that quickly put me in workout mode.

Kat’s reminder to swing my arms instead of merely focusing on the footwork helped me get my heart rate up quickly, and I broke a sweat during the warmup.

The class became increasingly more fun, even though I didn’t have the right footwear.

Post warmup was another instructional period with Kat to learn more steps. The slower pace and lack of music pulled me out of the moment until round two of the workout started. Again, the total body moves got my heart rate up quickly.

By the end of the thirty-minute class, I was ready to be finished and was left feeling like I could have gotten in a more efficient workout in other ways. While the dance sessions were fun, I found the frequent instructional breaks made things tedious.

I wanted to see how the class structure changed for different courses, so next challenged myself to a week 5 class workout. Despite not being able to keep up with all the moves, I thought the class pace felt more like a traditional workout.

Kat’s instructions weren’t distracting, though the constantly shifting camera angle actually left me slightly dizzy.

Overall, the classes flowed well with an appropriate amount of instruction. But when it comes to getting in an efficient workout, I was left feeling like there was a lot of wasted time where I could have been working.

Analysis of Customer Reviews

TAPfit vs. Figure 8 Fitness

For those who would instead be dancing at the club than sweating at the gym, another home workout program that promises to get you in shape is Figure 8 Fitness.

Figure 8 Fitness is lead by Latin DanceSport world medal winner Jaana Kunitz. It is offered as a comprehensive program of 14 classes and instructional videos that guide you through progressively challenging your body.

Rather than tap dance, this fitness series focuses on Latin-inspired dance moves to tone your core and get your glutes in gear.

The program is currently offered as a one-time purchase for $47. It’s another $10 if you want to receive DVDs instead of merely having digital access.

It includes all 14 workout sessions, a success tracker, a workout journal, a PDF workout planner guide, a nutritional blueprint, and a faster-paced “Figure 8 Express” series of over 30 ten-minute videos.

As with TAPfit, you can also sign up on a subscription basis. $11.99 per month (or $108 per year) gives you access to more than 100 hours of workout videos, including the full Figure 8 Fitness series and other programs like Figure 8 Ultimate, Figure 8 PRO, and more.

Deciding between these two dance cardio options will likely come down to pricing and your preferred workout style.

TAPfit’s tap dance style workout is more unique, but it’s likely to appeal to a smaller number of people. This program is also more expensive, and frankly, only works if you commit to the company’s patented tap shoes. Without them, the dancing sequences feel lackluster (at least in my experience).

Return Policy

All purchases qualify for a 30-day refund policy for refunds or exchanges. Items are only eligible if they are unused, in the same condition you received it, and in original packaging. Shipping costs are nonrefundable, and in most cases, a restocking fee and will be deducted from the refund.

TAPfit Online membership purchases are ineligible for refunds.

The Bottom Line

TAPfit offers a unique form of exercise that is likely to appeal to those who typically avoid the gym. The engaging dance workouts are easy to learn (even for beginners), and customer reviews indicate that it’s incredibly satisfying to tap along to the beat of the music.

For me, TAPfit wasn’t impressive. The workouts didn’t seem much different than other forms of dance cardio, and I found the classes started and stopped too often to feel like I was getting in the groove. But this is a largely personal opinion, and your experience may differ.

Overall, TAPfit classes will get you moving and burning calories, but you need to be realistic about how many calories you’ll actually burn per session.

In any case, the best kind of exercise is any type that you’ll actually do, so TAPfit is an excellent option if it offers what it takes to get you moving.

Unable to log in after purchasing

Purchased the system, credit card was charged, and then unable to log in. I keep getting the response that I'm not in the system, etc. Have been unable to log on to support@tapfit.com.

No support

I ordered the complete package and was promised support and a place to answer questions.

I found a "get started here" video and followed it, the first 4 modules were great and step by step covered each exercise they promised to put together in a program called "Broadway". The next module in the "Getting Started" video jumped to a complex dance routine that had none of the steps previously shown and no explanation for how to go from "do these steps" to "do this complex routine."

I called, I wrote, I used the FB "TAPFit Tribe." I would occasionally get someone who said they would work on it or call me, and I would not hear from them again. It's been 3 months. I periodically try to decipher that last video in "Getting Started" but it is way past me, and going on to something else seems futile if you can't get past the starting vid.

Nothing but frustration and expense. I would not recommend to anyone until they find a way to actually teach what they are doing. Looks like they are having lots of fun, but you are not allowed to participate. But they do keep sending me "How are we doing?" surveys (which I am not shy about repeating my issues) and requests to upgrade my program.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Impossible to return!

I have tried to return by emailing both addresses sent along with the package. I have had no response at all from TAPFit! Furthermore, small print says "may not be returned without receipt." Never did I receive a receipt neither by email or enclosed. I am still within 30 days of ordering. Will TAPFit contact me now so that I may post that problem was addressed?

Waiting, waiting, still waiting...

I ordered a month ago and noticed the order confirmation included "large" taps. I have a small foot. There was no place on the order to indicate shoe size. I immediately made an inquiry (within 10 minutes of ordering). I have yet to receive a response or any of the products. Sounded like a great idea when I ordered. Now I fear I am just out the money and have nothing to show for it. Can’t even find any evidence of an attempt to ship. Dismal experience!

Our standard delivery times are between 2 and 6 weeks however you can access our Online Studio instantly and start your weight loss journey with our no-equipment kickstart workout.

On our checkout page, there is an option to select your size based on your shoe size. I will have my tech team investigate your specific experience and explore the option to make this selection bigger so it is easier to see and understand.

Buyer beware

Buyer beware. They take your money, send DVDs that don’t work, there is no customer service to call, and they won’t refund your money. The videos are super boring and high impact, not low as advertised. Imagine Jazzercise but in tap shoes. They gave me an approved return and then refused to accept it. Made me pay for shipping and I have to pay to ship it back if I want it back. It already costs $30 to return. I’m under water $200 now and I don’t have the product. I feel scammed!

We also have a lot of "learn it" videos which guide our customers through step-by-step. Alternatively, you could skip these "learn it" sections and go straight to the dance workout itself. Never received product!

I ordered the TAPFit Deluxe Home Fit System on December 27, 2019. I paid $167 via PayPal, and it has been six weeks and I still have not received my order! I also signed up for the monthly online service for $9.95. The money was withdrawn from TAPFit for the month of January even though I was never sent the product. I have emailed TAPFit's customer support twice (there is no phone number to call), and received a generic response. I have requested a refund, and have gotten no response. I feel I have been scammed and ripped off. I've filed a claim with PayPal. Buyer beware!

Online lessons

Possible scam

I ordered the premium kit and was sent an email with a username/password. The username/password didn’t work. I emailed them 5 times to say it didn’t work and got one auto-reply saying they’d look into it. This is a Thursday and I accounted for the time change to Australia and they have not responded to me. I’m really worried that I just got scammed.

After seeing this review, I logged on to the Online Studio to change your password for you and tried to match up your review with your customer profile with us.

The customer in our system who matches your name has already accessed the site four times and also been able to change their profile picture. This customer also communicated with Jess in our customer service and she assisted them with their password and access to the site within a few hours of their order.

The Platinum system attached to this order was successfully delivered within 2 weeks of the order being placed.

I will be in contact with Highya regarding the above, as what is presented in this review does not match the experience shown in our system.

Scam! Do not buy!

I ordered mine weeks ago and still don’t have my stuff. Customer service doesn’t help and the Facebook Admin won’t approve my request.

Also, I signed up for the Platinum and I don’t have access to anything, just the basic classes. The other classes are not available to view.

I have emailed numerous times and the service is horrible. I am calling my bank for a chargeback on Monday because it is such a scam.

Unfortunately, we expected unprecedented delays to our supply chain as a result of COVID-19. We first experienced a delay in January but had no reason to believe our shipment would be delayed entering the US however the situation unfolded quickly. Our staff has been working extremely hard to get our orders out however there’s only so much we can do when there is a global pandemic and a lack of available staff in key areas of the supply chain. Your shipping delay was a result of COVID-19 delays, and not a result of usual business. Our shipments are usually despatched within 3 days and we pride ourselves on having such amazing warehouse staff.

I can see on your account that you have been able to access the Platinum videos and consume many of our premium videos and workouts. Because of our shipping delays, we provided all of our TAPfit members with our new program MOVEnBURN which allowed anyone with an equipment delay to access a platinum 8-week program with no-equipment so they could start their weight-loss journey instantly. I can see on your customer profile that you were sent this on the 12th of March.

I can see in your account that your order has been shipped with FedEx. I am so proud of our staff who have worked tirelessly to continue serving our customers during this unprecedented disruption. TAPfit - no merchandise

I ordered my kit for over $200 on April 14th. I received an email on the 21st stating that the COVID-19 was causing a delay in my shipment. It stated that I was now a VIP and my merchandise would ship in two days and I’d get a tracking number. I sent an email the first week of May letting them know that I never received a tracking number. I got an email two days later with an apology and that they would get back to me with details as soon as possible. Another week passed, and I emailed again. A few days later, I received the same email I received on the 21st about being a VIP and that my package would ship in a few days and I’d get the tracking number. After several emails, I have received no response. So I turned to Facebook where I saw the ad. I decided to start reporting the company because I’m not receiving the merchandise. I made comments about my experience and they blocked and removed the comments and made it so that one can only share. That was a big guilty admission because they know this is a scam. I decided to get a refund and I’m currently waiting to see if I get a response. I doubt I will. The refund policy is 30 days from the purchase date, but I never even received the merchandise within 30 days. It hasn’t even shipped within 30 days. During this COVID-19 time, it is sad to see a company take advantage of people. The ladies look so happy and post on Facebook while customers receive nothing. I was asked to be patient because of the delay, but they don’t care enough about the customers who were kind enough to be understanding.

Dissatisfied!

I am another customer who purchased this product in mid-April and never received it. Many emails stating that my order is being processed and I will be receiving a tracking number in 2 days...never happened! Have contacted customer service 3 or 4 times and my response is always the same - "your order is being processed and you will receive tracking number in 2 days." Must be the famous response they give everyone.

It would be better if they were just honest and say that they can't process my order now and give me the option of waiting or being refunded!

Very disgusted!
